The Law of Vows
[fn]Then Moses H4872 spoke H1696 to the heads H7218 of the tribes H4294 of the sons H1121 of Israel H3478, saying H559, “This H2088 is the word H1697 which H834 the LORD H3068 has commanded H6680:
If H3588 a man H376 makes H5087 a vow H5088 to the LORD H3068, or H176 takes H7650 an oath H7621 to [fn]put H631 himself H5315 under H631 a binding H632 obligation H632, he shall not break H2490 his word H1697; he shall act H6213 in accordance with everything H3605 that comes H3318 out H3318 of his mouth H6310.
“And if H3588 a woman H802 makes H5087 a vow H5088 to the LORD H3068, and puts H631 herself under H631 a binding H632 obligation H632 in her father’s H1 house H1004 in her youth H5271, 4 and her father H1 hears H8085 her vow H5088 and her obligation H632 under H631 which H834 she has put H631 herself H5315, and her father H1 [fn]says H2790 nothing H2790 to her, then all H3605 her vows H5088 shall [fn]remain H6965 valid H6965 and every H3605 binding H632 obligation H632 under H631 which H834 she has put H631 herself H5315 shall [fn]remain H6965 valid H6965. 5 But if H518 her father H1 expresses H5106 disapproval H5106 to her on the day H3117 he hears H8085 of it, none H3605 H3808 of her vows H5088 or her obligations H632 under H631 which H834 she has put H631 herself H5315 shall remain H6965 valid H6965; and the LORD H3068 will [fn]forgive H5545 her because H3588 her father H1 has expressed H5106 disapproval H5106 to her.
“However, if H518 she happens H1961 to [fn]marry H1961 H376 while [fn]under H5921 her vows H5088 or H176 the impulsive H4008 statement H4008 of her lips H8193 by which H834 she has obligated H631 herself H5315, 7 and her husband H376 hears H8085 of it and says H2790 nothing H2790 to her on the day H3117 he hears H8085 it, then her vows H5088 shall remain H6965 valid H6965 and her binding H632 obligations H632 under H631 which H834 she has put H631 herself H5315 shall remain H6965 valid H6965. 8 But if H518 on the day H3117 her husband H376 hears H8085 of it, he expresses H5106 disapproval H5106 to her, then he will annul H6565 her vow H5088 which H834 [fn]she is under H5921 and the impulsive H4008 statement H4008 of her lips H8193 by which H834 she has obligated H631 herself H5315; and the LORD H3068 will [fn]forgive H5545 her.
“But as for the vow H5088 of a widow H490 or of a divorced H1644 woman, every H3605 binding H631 obligation H631 under H631 which H834 she has put H631 herself H5315, shall remain H6965 valid H6965 against H5921 her. 10 However, if H518 a married woman vowed H5087 in her husband’s H376 house H1004, or H176 put H631 herself H5315 under H631 a binding H632 obligation H632 with an oath H7621, 11 and her husband H376 heard H8085 it, but said H2790 nothing H2790 to her and did not express H5106 disapproval H5106 to her, then all H3605 her vows H5088 shall remain H6965 valid H6965 and every H3605 binding H632 obligation H632 under H631 which H834 she put H631 herself H5315 shall remain H6965 valid H6965. 12 But if H518 her husband H376 actually H6565 annuls H6565 them on the day H3117 he hears H8085 them, then no H3808 H3605 utterance H4161 from her lips H8193 concerning her vows H5088 or the obligation H632 she put on herself H5315 shall remain H6965 valid H6965; her husband H376 has annulled H6565 them, and the LORD H3068 will [fn]forgive H5545 her.
“Every H3605 vow H5088 and every H3605 binding H632 oath H7621 to humble H6031 herself H5315, her husband H376 may confirm H6965 it or her husband H376 may annul H6565 it. 14 But if H518 her husband H376 in H2790 fact H2790 says H2790 nothing H2790 to her from day H3117 to day H3117, then he confirms H6965 all H3605 her vows H5088 or H176 all H3605 her binding H632 obligations H632 which H834 are on her; he has confirmed H6965 them, because H3588 he said H2790 nothing H2790 to her on the day H3117 he heard H8085 them. 15 However, if H518 he actually H6565 annuls H6565 them [fn]after H310 he has heard H8085 them, then he shall bear H5375 the responsibility for her guilt H5771.”
These H428 are the statutes H2706 which H834 the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 Moses H4872 concerning matters between H996 a man H376 and his wife H802, and between H996 a father H1 and his daughter H1323 while she is in her youth H5271 in her father’s H1 house H1004.
