PSALM 44
Former Times of Help and Present Troubles.
For the music director. A [fn]Maskil of the sons of Korah.
1 God H430, we have heard H8085 with our ears H241,
Our fathers H1 have told H5608 us
The work H6467 that You did H6466 in their days H3117,
In the days H3117 of old H6924.
2 You with Your own hand H3027 drove H3423 out H3423 the nations H1471;
Then You planted H5193 them;
You afflicted H7489 the peoples H3816,
Then You let H7971 them go H7971 free H7971.
3 For by their own sword H2719 they did not possess H3423 the land H776,
And their own arm H2220 did not save H3467 them,
But Your right H3225 hand H3225 and Your arm H2220 and the light H216 of Your presence H6440,
For You favored H7521 them.
4 You are my King H4428, God H430;
Command H6680 [fn]victories H3444 for Jacob H3290.
5 Through You we will push H5055 back H5055 our adversaries H6862;
Through Your name H8034 we will trample H947 down H947 those who rise H6965 up H6965 against us.
6 For I will not trust H982 in my bow H7198,
Nor H3808 will my sword H2719 save H3467 me.
7 But You have saved H3467 us from our adversaries H6862,
And You have put H954 to H954 shame H954 those who hate H8130 us.
8 In God H430 we have boasted H1984 all H3605 day H3117 long,
And we will give H3034 thanks H3034 to Your name H8034 forever H5769. Selah H5542
9 Yet H637 You have rejected H2186 us and brought H3637 us to H3637 dishonor H3637,
And do not go H3318 out H3318 with our armies H6635.
10 You cause us to turn H7725 back H268 from the enemy H6862;
And those who hate H8130 us have taken H8154 spoils H8154 for themselves.
11 You turn H5414 us over H5414 [fn]to be eaten H3978 like sheep H6629,
And have scattered H2219 us among the nations H1471.
12 You sell H4376 Your people H5971 [fn]cheaply H3808 H1952,
And have not [fn]profited H7235 by their sale H4242.
13 You make H7760 us an object of reproach H2781 to our neighbors H7934,
Of scoffing H3933 and ridicule H7047 to those around H5439 us.
14 You make H7760 us a proverb H4912 among the nations H1471,
A [fn]laughingstock H4493 H7218 among the peoples H3816.
15 All H3605 day H3117 long my dishonor H3639 is before H5048 me
And [fn]I am covered H3680 with my humiliation H1322 H6440,
16 Because H4480 of the voice H6963 of one who taunts H2778 and reviles H1442,
Because H4480 of the presence H6440 of the enemy H340 and the avenger H5358.
17 All H3605 this H2088 has come H935 upon us, but we have not forgotten H7911 You,
And we have not dealt H8266 falsely H8266 with Your covenant H1285.
18 Our heart H3820 has not turned H5472 back H268,
And our steps H838 have not deviated H5186 from Your way H734,
19 Yet H3588 You have crushed H1794 us in a place H4725 of jackals H8565
And covered H3680 us with [fn]deep H6757 darkness H6757.
20 If H518 we had forgotten H7911 the name H8034 of our God H430
Or extended H6566 our [fn]hands H3709 to a strange H2114 god H410,
21 Would God H430 not find H2713 this H2088 out H2713?
For He knows H3045 the secrets H8587 of the heart H3820.
22 But for H5921 Your sake H5921 we are killed H2026 all H3605 day H3117 long;
We are regarded H2803 as sheep H6629 to be slaughtered H2878.
23 Wake H5782 Yourself up H5782, why H4100 do You sleep H3462, Lord H136?
Awake H6974, do not reject H2186 us forever H5331.
24 Why H4100 do You hide H5641 Your face H6440
And forget H7911 our affliction H6040 and oppression H3906?
25 For our souls H5315 have sunk H7743 down H7743 into the dust H6083;
Our bodies H990 cling H1692 to the earth H776.
