Amos 3

Amo 3:1-15—Part III. Jehovah's controversy with "the whole family" of Jacob (Amos 3:1 - 9:10).

Amo 3:1 Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying,

the whole family

The language here, and the expression "house of Jacob," Amos 3:13 evidently gives the prophecy a wider application than to "Israel," the ten-tribe northern kingdom, though the judgment was, in the event, executed first upon the northern kingdom (2Ki 17:18-23).

Amo 3:2 You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you you for all your iniquities.

I will punish you

It is noteworthy that Jehovah's controversy with the Gentile cities which hated Israel is brief: "I will send a fire." But Israel had been brought into the place of privilege and so of responsibility, and the LORD's indictment is detailed and unsparing. Cf. Mat 11:23; Luk 12:47, 48.

Amo 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?

and the LORD hath not done it?

Or, and shall not the Lord do somewhat?

Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

the prophets

Inspiration. Mic 3:8. (Exo 4:15; Rev 22:19.)

Amo 3:8 The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?

who can but prophesy

Act 4:20; 5:20, 29; 1Co 9:16
