Isa 8:1-22—Prediction of the Assyrian invasion.

Isa 8:1 Moreover the LORD said unto me, Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man's pen concerning Mahershalalhashbaz.

write in it

Inspiration. Isa 30:8. (Exo 4:15; Rev 22:19.)

Isa 8:3 And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.

Mahershalalhashbaz

Rezin

Isa 7:1, 2, 6.

Isa 8:8 And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.

reach even to the neck

Isa 30:28.

Immanuel

Isa 8:12 Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.

confederacy [alliance]

The reference is to the attempt to terrify Judah by the confederacy between Syria and Samaria (Isa 7:1-2).

nor be afraid

1Pe 3:14, 15.

Isa 8:13 Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

Sanctify the LORD of hosts

Isa 8:14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

a stone of stumbling

Christ (as Stone). Isa 28:16. (Exo 17:6; 1Pe 2:8.)

Isa 8:18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.

I and the children

Heb 2:13.

signs

The primary application here is to the two sons of Isaiah,

  • Maher-shalal-hash-baz = "haste ye, haste ye to the spoil," a "sign" of the coming judgment of the captivity of Judah;
  • Shear-jashub = "a remnant shall return," a "sign" of the return of a remnant of Judah at the end of the seventy years (Jer 25:11, 12; Dan 9:2).
  • The larger and final reference is to our Lord (Heb 2:13, 14).
