Leviticus 11

Lev 11:1-47—A holy God—a holy people: (1) their food.

Lev 11:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

These are the beasts

The dietary regulations of the covenant people must be regarded primarily as sanitary. Israel, it must be remembered, was a nation living on the earth under a theocratic government. Of necessity the divine legislation concerned itself with the social as well as with the religious life of the people. To force upon every word of that legislation a typical meaning is to strain 1 Corinthians 10:1-11 and Hebrews 9:23, 24 beyond all reasonable interpretation.

Lev 11:6 And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

the hare

Hebrew arnebeth, an unidentified animal, but certainly not a hare, possessing as it is said to, characteristics not possessed by the hare. The supposed error in the text is due entirely to the translators' assumption that the English hare and the ancient "arnebeth" were identical.

Lev 11:24 And for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even.

for these ye shall be unclean

Lev 11:8; Lev 17:15, 16; 1Co 15:33.

Lev 11:25 And whosoever beareth ought of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

wash his clothes

Num 19:10, 22; 31:24; Zec 13:1; Heb 9:10; 10:22.

Lev 11:28 And he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you.

wash his clothes

Lev 11:24, 25

Lev 11:31 These are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they be dead, shall be unclean until the even.

touch them

Lev 11:8; Hag 2:13.

Lev 11:33 And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it.

break it

Psa 2:9; Jer 48:38.

Lev 11:44 For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

for I am holy

1Pe 1:16.
