Revelation 2

Rev 2:1-7—Part II. "The things which are": the seven churches. (1) The message to Ephesus. The church at the end of the apostolic age; first love left.

Rev 2:1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;

Rev 2:6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate.

Nicolaitanes

Rev 2:15, contra, 1Pe 5:2-3; cf. Mat 24:49.

From nikao, "to conquer," and laos, "the people," or "laity." There is no ancient authority for a sect of the Nicolaitanes. If the word is symbolic it refers to the earliest form of the notion of a priestly order, or "clergy," which later divided an equal brotherhood (Mat 23:8), into "priests" and "laity." What in Ephesus was "deeds" (Rev 2:6) had become in Pergamos a "doctrine" (Rev 2:15).

which I also hate

Cf. Mat 18:1-11; 20:25-28.

Rev 2:13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.

Rev 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

the doctrine of Balaam

The "doctrine" of Balaam (cf. Scofield 2 Peter 2:15, note; Jude 1:11, note) was his teaching Balak to corrupt the people who could not be cursed (Num 31:15-16; 22:5; 23:8), by tempting them to marry women of Moab, defile their separation, and abandon their pilgrim character. It is that union of the world and the church which is spiritual unchastity (Jas 4:4). Pergamos had lost the pilgrim character and was "dwelling" (Rev 2:13) "where Satan's throne is," in the world (Jhn 12:31; 14:30; 16:11).
