primarily signifies "to rub on the touchstone, to put to the test" (from basanos, "a touchstone," a dark stone used in testing metals); hence, "to examine by torture," and, in general, "to distress;" in Rev 12:2, "in pain," RV (AV, "pained"), in connection with parturition.
