They named the city Dan, after the name of their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel. The city was formerly named Laish.
وَدَعَوْا اسْمَ الْمَدِينَةِ «دَانَ» بِاسْمِ دَانٍ أَبِيهِمِ الَّذِي وُلِدَ لإِسْرَائِيلَ. وَلكِنَّ اسْمَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَوَّلاً «لاَيِشُ».
