Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country to purify themselves before the Passover.
Now the Passover of the Jews was approaching, and many from the country went up to Jerusalem before Passover to purify themselves [ceremonially, so that they would be able to participate in the feast].
وَكَانَ فِصْحُ الْيَهُودِ قَرِيبًا. فَصَعِدَ كَثِيرُونَ مِنَ الْكُوَرِ إِلَى أُورُشَلِيمَ قَبْلَ الْفِصْحِ لِيُطَهِّرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ.
