"Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD."
(Psalm 27:14 NIV)

Wait at his door with prayer; wait at his foot with humility; wait at his table with service; wait at his window with expectancy.

– C. H. Spurgeon, Psalm 27

"And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."
(Ephesians 5:2 ESV)

Here the apostle directs us to the example of Christ, whom Christians are obliged to imitate, and in whom we have an instance of the most free and generous love that ever was, that great love wherewith he hath loved us. We are all joint sharers in that love, and partakers of the comfort of it, and therefore should love one another, Christ having loved us all and given such proof of his love to us; for he hath given himself for us.

– Matthew Henry, Commentary on Ephesians 5

"'…but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.'"
(John 4:14 NASB20)

The heart is as insatiable as the grave till Jesus enters it, and then it is a cup full to overflowing. There is such a fulness in Christ that He alone is the believer's all. The true saint is so completely satisfied with the all-sufficiency of Jesus that he thirsts no more-except it be for deeper draughts of the living fountain.

– C. H. Spurgeon, Morning and Evening (October 6th)

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…"
(1 Peter 1:3 NIV)

We are born again to a living hope, because we have eternal life in a Savior who has conquered death Himself. The hope lives because it is set upon an inheritance incorruptible that can never fade away because it is reserved in heaven. This is a significant contrast to any inheritance on this earth.

"Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it [flow] the springs of life."
(Proverbs 4:23 NASB20)

We are as able to stop the sun in its course, or make the rivers run backward, as by our own skill and power to rule and order our hearts: we may as well be our own saviours, as our own keepers; and yet Solomon speaks properly enough when he says, keep thy heart; because the duty is ours; though the power be God's.

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope."
(Romans 15:13 ESV)

God is the God of hope. He is the foundation on which our hope is built, and he is the builder that does himself raise it: he is both the object of our hope, and the author of it.

"[If] I take the wings of the morning, [and] dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me."
(Psalm 139:9-10 KJV)

Never are God's children so far removed upon the earth that they might fall outside the protective grasp of their Lord. He is to everlasting, filling all the heavens with His majesty! Fear no bitter darkness nor lasting night for ever shall the Lord of heaven redeem you who believe unto the everlasting morning and bathe you in light imperishable!

"…being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete [it] until the day of Jesus Christ;"
(Philippians 1:6 NKJV)

The good work to which Paul here refers is the work of salvation (from justification through our ultimate glorification). This is a work that God has accomplished for us and is faithfully working in us until the day of Christ. On that day our salvation will be consummated and brought to a completion because of God's faithfulness to keep His promise.

September 2022

"Let's hold firmly to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;"
(Hebrews 10:23 NASB20)

This persistence of trust in God is related to His promises and His faithfulness. We can cling tightly to the promises of God. We can confidently hope in God's fulfilling His promises to us. We do not need to waver in doubt, because God is reliable. He is trustworthy. He is faithful.

"But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world."
(1 Timothy 6:6-7 ESV)

Christian contentment is that sweet, inward, quiet, gracious frame of spirit, freely submitting to, and taking delight in God's wise, and fatherly disposal in every condition.

"So we Your people and the sheep of Your pasture Will give thanks to You forever; To all generations we will tell of Your praise."
(Psalm 79:13 NASB20)

Praise is the occupation of the godly, their eternal work, and their present pleasure. Singing is the fitting embodiment for praise, and therefore do the saints make melody before the Lord Most High.

– C. H. Spurgeon, Psalm 7

"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."
(Isaiah 7:14 NKJV)

There were thus two things which the Savior did for us by becoming Man. He banished death from us and made us anew; and, invisible and imperceptible as in Himself He is, He became visible through His works and revealed Himself as the Word of the Father, the Ruler and King of the whole creation.

– Athanasius, On the Incarnation of the Word
