保罗继续解释道：但我有上帝为证，我没有再往哥林多去，是为要宽恕你们（第 23 节） 。正如前面在第 1 章中提到的，对保罗的指控之一是，他打算返回哥林多时“犹豫不决”（第 17 节），但后来却没有这样做。但我有上帝为证，我的灵魂。这里使用的灵魂一词是“psychen”，通常被翻译为“灵魂”或“生命”。
