当但以理得知国王下令要杀掉巴比伦所有的智者时，他便去找国王派来执行命令的人亚略，并要求将他带到国王面前。但以理还要求亚略不要杀掉巴比伦的智者。但以理只能保护自己和他的三个朋友。他可以辩解说，他杀的是那些被禁止在以色列中出现的人（出埃及记 22:18）。这样做会抬高他自己和他的朋友。但以理却选择为罪人求情。这是耶稣大约六百年后将采取的姿态的写照。
亚略就是但以理在第一章中得到宠爱的那位首领。当但以理告诉亚略他能为王解梦时，亚略急忙把但以理带到王面前，告诉王说： “我在犹大被掳的人中，找到一个人，他能为王解梦！”亚略对但以理的描述暗示王不认识但以理，否则亚略很可能会提到他的名字。
这段经文提到，但以理有一个巴比伦名字，伯提沙撒，也许是因为这样他才能被介绍给国王。国王问但以理能否向他解释他所见的梦和梦的解释。但以理的回答非常圆滑，因为从某种意义上说，他回答“不能”，因为没有凡人能解释未来的梦。但从另一种意义上说，他回答“可以”，因为他是上帝的使者，可以向国王解释。
但以理继续向尼布甲尼撒解释他的梦是什么以及它意味着什么；这是巴比伦其他智者都无法做到的。当尼布甲尼撒问但以理是否可以解释他的梦时，但以理告诉他可以，但前提是他的上帝，唯一的真神，向他揭示了这个梦是什么以及它意味着什么。但以理并不将理解梦的功劳归于自己，相反，他将所有的荣耀都归于上帝。
但以理告诉国王，天上有一位神能揭示奥秘，他已向尼布甲尼撒王透露了日后将要发生的事。但以理多次重申，这个梦不是他用自己的智慧向他揭示的，而是来自唯一真神的启示。但以理给国王一个预告，告诉他他的梦与未来将要发生的事有关；而那位揭示奥秘的人已向你透露了将要发生的事。日后这个词指的是遥远的未来。
