在去见国王之前，但以理和他的三个朋友哈拿尼雅、米沙利和亚撒利雅向上帝祈祷，祈求上帝赐予智慧，并请求天上的上帝怜悯，解开这个谜团；向但以理展示并解释尼布甲尼撒所见的梦。他们有一个明确而正当的动机，那就是但以理和他的朋友不会与巴比伦的其他智者一起被毁灭。

与巴比伦的其他智者不同，但以理信靠上帝，他知道他拥有的每一份天赋，以及理解国王梦境的任何希望，都寄托在上帝身上。他凡事都依靠上帝，并赞美上帝向他展示和解释了梦境。但以理认识到尼布甲尼撒有权杀死他，但上帝高于尼布甲尼撒。是上帝废黜和建立国王。但以理意识到上帝是万物之主。看起来但以理和他的朋友都是初级智者，但但以理认识到是上帝赋予智者智慧。但以理勇敢地站出来，走在资深智者前面，这源于他对上帝的信心。
但以理祷告的最后部分承认
上帝揭示了深奥和隐藏的事物；
他知道黑暗中有什么，
光与他同住。
丹尼尔并不幻想梦的解释来自上帝以外的任何人。上帝无所不知，丹尼尔在感谢祷告中承认了这一点。
丹尼尔直接表达了感谢，说道：
我祖先的神啊，我感谢赞美你，
因为你赐给我智慧和力量；
现在你已让我知道我们向你请求的是什么，
因为你已将王的事告诉我们了。
