尼布甲尼撒王又做了一个令他心烦意乱的梦，他的智者们无法解释。于是他请来了丹尼尔。丹尼尔犹豫着是否要解释这个梦，因为这对于国王来说是个坏消息。尼布甲尼撒王向丹尼尔保证，即使他对这个梦的解释是坏消息，他也想听听，现在丹尼尔开始解释这个梦的含义。
伯提沙撒（但以理）回答说：“主啊，但愿这梦发生在那些恨你的人身上，梦的解释发生在你的敌人身上！”看来但以理同情国王，很遗憾告诉他这个坏消息。国王看到的那棵树长得又大又壮，高到天上，全地都能看见，树叶美丽，果实累累，树上有万物的食物，田野的野兽栖息在树下，天空的飞鸟栖息在树枝上，这棵树代表国王。他变得伟大而强大。他的王国庞大而强大，为他领土内的所有人提供食物和财富。他的威严变得伟大，触及天际，他的统治范围延伸到地极。尼布甲尼撒王国的权力和荣耀的好消息首先传来。但坏消息随之而来。
国王看见一位天使般的守望者，一位圣者，从天而降，奉至高者的旨意，宣布那棵代表尼布甲尼撒和他强大统治的巨树将会发生什么。天使说： “砍倒这棵树，毁掉它；但要把树桩和它的根留在地里，用铁和铜环绕在田野的新草里，让它被天上的露水浸透，让它与田野的野兽共享，直到七个时期过去。”在但以理详细说明这一宣言的含义之前，国王一定已经意识到，他和他的统治将会发生非常糟糕的事情。
