但以理书第 7 章回顾了时间。本章讲述了但以理在伯沙撒元年经历的预言性异象，伯沙撒在尼布甲尼撒之后成为巴比伦王。伯沙撒的统治（和生命）在第 5 章结束，在米底人和波斯人征服并统治巴比伦之后，米底人大流士接管了巴比伦的统治。但以理在狮子坑中的情节发生在大流士统治期间，即第 6 章。
丹尼尔的异象发生在晚上，他躺在床上睡觉时。他做了一个梦，脑海中浮现出各种异象。醒来后，丹尼尔将梦境总结起来。本章是丹尼尔对那个梦境的书面记录。
异象以暴风雨的场景开始：天上的四股风搅动着大海。一片混乱、黑暗、翻滚的海洋被四面八方的风吹得翻滚不已。异象变得更加诡异；丹尼尔看到四只巨兽从海中升起-每只都不一样。巨大、怪异的怪物从水中爬上陆地。
