但以理书第 9 章发生在大流士王统治迦勒底王国的第一年。迦勒底人伯沙撒在米底亚-波斯征服战中被杀后，大流士继承了巴比伦的统治权（但以理书 5:30-31）。
但以理一生大部分时间都生活在巴比伦。他被犹大流放，被外国侵略者俘虏，在不同的文化中长大（但以理书 1:6）。然而，在巴比伦生活期间，在多位统治者统治下，但以理始终坚信上帝。他只忠于上帝。
