但以理还没结束祷告，上帝就回应了。但以理写道，当他在说话、祷告、承认自己的罪和以色列人民的罪，并在主面前恳求时-当他还在祷告时，加百列出现了。
加百列是天使，是上帝派来的使者。但以理将他描述为男人，因为他以人类的形态出现，就像他之前在但以理的异象中在但以理书 8:15-19 中所见的那样。但以理显然认出了加百列。他报告说，加百列在晚祭时到达，但以理极度疲惫。但以理筋疲力尽。这是一天的结束，他已经禁食祈祷了很长时间。他可能还因为反思自己与祖国的疏离、忏悔罪过以及想知道上帝的答案是什么而情绪失控，他是否会让以色列人民重返家园，并向他们表示同情。
