不可因儿子的缘故杀父，也不可因父亲的缘故杀子（第 16 节）。在耶和华眼中，这样做就等于冤枉无辜的人，以该死的罪名起诉。上帝赋予每个人选择的能力，每个人都要承担自己选择的后果。
这条法律的基本原则是，每个人都应因自己的罪孽而被处死。这里的罪孽一词可能是指某人犯下的死罪。因此，当权者必须确保惩罚有罪的人并保护无辜者，即使无辜者是近亲。无论一个人有多重要，如果他们犯了死罪，他们就必须被追究责任。
这与第二条诫命中所说的内容（申命记 5:8-10）有什么对应关系？在命令人们不要制造、崇拜或侍奉偶像之后，耶和华说他是“忌邪的神，恨我的，我必追讨他的罪，自父及子，直到三四代”。答案是，这节经文讲的是上帝的怜悯。上帝在对偶像崇拜和违背上帝及其道路的罪孽施以神圣审判之前，会给人们时间悔改。只有当孩子们延续他们父亲的罪孽三到四代时，上帝才会最终介入进行审判。如果一代人悔改，那么上帝就不会再施行审判。

摩西禁止以色列人因家庭成员犯下的行为而惩罚家庭成员。不应有血仇。家庭不应承担责任。个人应承担责任。
在后来的以色列历史中，耶利米和以西结都重申了摩西的个人责任原则，因为被流放的以色列人认为他们受苦是因为他们祖先的罪孽（耶利米书 31:29-30；以西结书 18:14-20）。先知们大胆地向他们宣告，每个人都会因自己的罪孽受到惩罚（耶利米书 31:29-30；以西结书 18:14-20）。上帝赋予每个人做出选择的权力。这是按照上帝的形象被创造的重要部分。每个人都可以为自己做出某些选择，每个人都将承担自己选择的后果。
