男人可以在家里自由活动一年。这段时间里，他的首要任务是让妻子幸福快乐。他不必承担任何公共义务，这样他就可以把时间奉献给家人。这段时间至少会带来两个重要的好处。首先，夫妻俩有足够的时间学会彼此相爱。其次，新婚夫妇有时间生孩子。这样可以防止丈夫在战场上阵亡时，夫妻俩没有孩子。
这一原则的一个可能例外似乎是在发生极端的国家紧急事件时。《列王纪上》中就有这样的例子，当时以色列王巴沙与犹大王亚撒交战，“亚撒王下令犹大全民，不许任何人例外”参战（列王纪上 15:22）。
第八条诫命禁止偷窃，这反映了一种更广泛的概念，即尊重他人的个人主权，尊重他们做出选择的权力。这提升了每个人的尊严，同时保护他们免受剥削。这种做出选择的自由可以受到限制，并且允许有限的兵役。但这种免服兵役的特权将家庭和对女性的照顾放在首位。
