本章的开头提到摩西的岳父，米甸祭司叶忒罗。正如出埃及记 2:18 所见，叶忒罗也称为 "流珥"。"叶忒罗" 的名字第一次出现在出埃及记 3:1，他是米甸人。米甸是亚伯拉罕从基土拉所生的儿子 (创世记 25:2)；米甸人居住在亚喀巴湾 (红海的东北角"兔耳朵") 的东海岸。
