其它九条诫命都是关于人必须 (或必须不) 参与的行为，但第十条有些不同。它所涉及的是人心和思想里的想法。命令说：不可贪恋。"贪恋" 一词 (希伯来文 "khamad ") 有 "强烈渴望" 或 "渴望已久"，甚至是 "贪恋已久" (箴言 6:25) 的概念。它用于描述伊甸园的树是如何 "让人赏心悦目" (创世记 2:9；3:6)。
耶和华提到五件属于邻舍、不可贪恋的物品-他们的房屋 (代表邻舍所拥有的一切)、妻子、男仆、女婢、牛驴或他一切所有的。
这可以被视为是包罗万象的内容，且清楚地表明神对以色列自治的意图。神清楚地表明，每个社区成员都要顺服祂，尊重其他成员的生命和财产。这一不要贪恋的命令堵住了所有会引发任何第六条到第九条诫命的漏洞。它清楚地表明，每个社区成员都要保护和服务其他成员的最佳利益。
神应许顺服所带来的祝福很大程度上直接来自顺服。任何以这种方式对待彼此的社区都会是一个令人愉悦和富有成效的居住地。
有趣的是，当耶稣被法利赛人询问 "夫子，律法上的诫命，哪一条是最大的呢？" 时，他并没有直接引用十条诫命。
"耶稣对他说，'你要尽心、尽性、尽意爱主你的神。'这是诫命中的第一，且是最大的。其次也相仿，就是要爱人如己。"(马太福音 22:36-39)
耶稣引用的经文是申命记 6:4 (爱神) 和利未记 19:18 (爱人如己)。然后，耶稣又说，"这两条诫命是律法和先知一切道理的总纲" (马太福音 22:40)。
貌似可以将其合理地总结为：第一最大的诫命是十诫的前五条 (父母在孩子面前是代表神)，第二最大的诫命是十诫后五条的总结。第十条诫命可以被视为是肯定命令 "爱人如己" 的反面陈述。
