第三条诫命规定，不可妄称耶和华你神的名。妄称（希伯来语“nasah”）的意思是“高举”。此处翻译为“妄称”的短语也出现在出埃及记23:1中，在那里被翻译为“虚假地”。申命记也重复了这条诫命，并且也包含一个翻译为“妄称”的例子（申命记5:20）。因此，这条禁令的本质似乎是禁止以虚假的方式谈论或代表上帝。
