下一件要描述的服饰是决断的胸牌，要穿在以弗得之上。之所以称为胸牌，是因为它是用来做决定的。描述它的经文有十六节，比祭司的其它服饰都长，由此可看出其重要性。具体细节如下：
它要用巧匠的手工做，意思是由一位大师来做。要和以弗得一样的做法，所以它是用金线和蓝色、紫色、朱红色线，并捻的细麻做成。这胸牌要四方的，叠为两层，长一虎口，宽一虎口。一虎口是一个固定测量单位，是基于手的宽度，大概是九英寸 (23 厘米)。这样，胸牌就是九英寸的正方形。
要在胸牌上面镶宝石四行。具体细节如下：第一行是红宝石、红璧玺、红玉；第二行是绿宝石、蓝宝石、金钢石；第三行是紫玛瑙、白玛瑙、紫晶；第四行是水苍玉、红玛瑙、碧玉。每一块宝石都要镶在金槽中。这槽是宝石所在的基座。四排，每排各三颗，共十二颗。之后，耶和华命令说，这些宝石都要按着以色列十二个儿子的名字。也就是说，以色列十二支派的名字要刻在十二颗宝石之上，按他们的出生顺序排列。这样胸牌就像是古代的生辰石。
耶和华命令说宝石仿佛刻图书，刻十二个支派的名字。这些宝石要刻上以色列十二支派的名字，与红宝石相似，但是一块宝石上只有一个名字。这就显明以色列人对耶和华而言是何等地宝贵，同时也显明了民族中极致的巧匠之工。虽然在埃及作奴隶，但是许多以色列人仍然学习了提供给埃及精英阶层的技能。
