耶和华吩咐摩西把坛放在法柜前的幔子外。目前，圣所外有七个灯盏的灯台 (出埃及记 25:31-40)。幔子将圣所和放约柜的至圣所分开，大祭司会穿过圣所进入至圣所。利未记 16:12-13 说到，赎罪日当天在至圣所服事时，大祭司要从坛上拿香，"带入幔子内"。
