香坛是这样制作的：
巧匠总监以撒列用皂荚木做香坛。同样的木质也用于制造约柜、陈设饼的桌子和其它相关物品。
坛的尺寸是长一肘，宽一肘，高二肘，也就是十八英寸 (1.5 英尺或 45.7 厘米) 的正方形，高三十三英寸 (3 英尺或 91.4 厘米)。
坛的四角与坛接连一块 (25 节)。角不是外加于坛的，而是与坛接连一块。角是能力的标志。
巧匠又用精金把坛的上面与坛的四面并坛的四角包裹，又在坛的四围镶上金牙边 (26 节)。因坛的功用，所包裹的是金而非铜，正如燔祭坛一样 (出埃及记 35:16)。
为了便于运输，他做两个金环，安在牙子边以下，在坛的两旁、两根横撑上，作为穿杠的用处，以便抬坛。
接下来，他用皂荚木做杠，用金包裹。利未人会将杠穿入金环，抬坛所用。
最后，他又按做香之法做圣膏油和馨香料的净香 (29 节)。这香烧于坛上时会发出甜甜的香气，上升于耶和华的面前。君主耶和华清楚地表明，祂的附庸 (以色列) 要提供香，为要使他们的祷告被祂[耶和华]悦纳。这是一幅神约民代祷的画面。正如在希伯来书 9:23 所述，帐幕和其内的每一个物品都反映了天上的实物。在启示录 5:8，使徒约翰在天上的异象中看见满了香的碗是神百姓的祷告。在启示录 8:3-4，一位天使为这些祷告添加了香，从金香炉中将它们献给神。
香坛置于隔开圣所和至圣所的幔子前 (出埃及记 30:6)。希伯来文书的作者说道，香坛与约柜和其它物品是在至圣所中 (希伯来书 9:3-4)。
