保罗说律法是因人的罪性而被赐予来引导他们，直到基督降临，等候那蒙应许的子孙（耶稣）来到。律法不赐予生命，不像藉着信得到神的应许那样。
律法由中保所赐，这好像是对犹太人所持信心的肯定，即众天使是将律法赐给以色列百姓的使者。希伯来书2:2似乎也表明了同样的观点。但中保本不是为一面作的，起码要有两方中保才能发挥作用。律法通过中保来赐予，从神到人。但神把祂的应许直接赐给亚伯拉罕，神却是一位。因此神给亚伯拉罕的应许一定是完全不同于律法的。
重要的是要记住，给加拉太人的整封信都是为了理清他们的理解，他们的理解已经被与之竞争的犹太"权威"所扭曲，这些犹太"权威"声称必须遵行宗教规条以便在基督里得以成全（加拉太书 3:3），甚至在神面前称义（加拉太书 2:2）。律法并不拯救或者成全任何人；然而，它确实显示我们需要耶稣。圣经把众人都圈在罪里，使所应许的福因信耶稣基督，归给那信的人。
