马太终结了耶稣家谱中从亚伯拉罕到大卫王的第一部分。俄备得是耶西的父亲，耶西是大卫王的父亲。马太将耶稣与神应许亚伯拉罕要祝福地上列国的应验联系起来 (创世记 12:3)。他也要确立耶稣是大卫王室血统，是继承大卫宝座、期待已久的以色列王弥赛亚基督，或受膏者。这弥赛亚基督是众人所期待，要按神说有人要坐在王位上直到永远的应许，坐在大卫王宝座上的那位 (撒母耳记下 7:13)。马太将耶稣呈现为该应许的应验。新约的一个重要主题是人们错过了耶稣弥撒亚的身份，因为他并未满足他们的政治期待。
