箴言11章12节，所罗门说： “藐视邻舍的，是愚昧无知；明哲人却静默不语。”（第12节）藐视邻舍就是轻视他人，仿佛对方价值微不足道。所罗门说，这并非世故老练，而是愚昧无知。
有识之士保持沉默，因为智慧无需炫耀优越感。智慧本身蕴含着足够的沉稳，足以避免轻蔑之言。此处的沉默并非懦弱，而是谦逊与远见所赋予的克制。
这节经文提醒我们，智慧在于尊重他人身上神的形象。即使需要纠正，智慧也不会流露出轻蔑之意。耶稣在马太福音中也教导了同样的心境，呼召门徒要像自己希望被对待那样去对待他人（欲了解更多基督如何呼召门徒以自己渴望的关爱去对待他人，从而体现祂教导和律法的核心，请阅读我们对马太福音7:12的注释）。
