箴言11章2节，所罗门说： “骄傲来，羞辱也来；谦卑人却有智慧。”（第2节）骄傲是箴言中提到的一大敌人，因为它源于一种自以为是的观念，即我们除了上帝之外，什么都懂。这种心态总是使人远离真理，一旦背弃真理，羞辱便会随之而来。
骄傲带来耻辱，因为它建立在虚幻之上。骄傲的人渴望高位而不求顺服，渴望赞美而不求服侍，渴望名利而不信靠上帝。然而，建立在自我高举之上的生活无法长久，因为它脱离了现实。《箴言》反复表明，上帝的世界抵制骄傲，因为它抵挡上帝。
相反，谦卑的人有智慧。谦卑并非自我厌恶，而是如实看待现实。它承认自己的需要，接受教导，并信靠上帝。这就是为什么谦卑与智慧密不可分。《雅各书》4:6重申了这一原则，经文说上帝阻挡骄傲的人，赐恩给谦卑的人。
