大卫继续讲述上帝的无所不在（祂永远存在于所有地方）和无所不能（祂掌控万物的能力），将二者结合起来。大卫开始谈论光明与黑暗的对比，这很可能是这个世界上善与恶之间持续冲突的隐喻。黑暗似乎总是潜伏在光明的边缘，威胁着要侵蚀光明。同样，大卫表达了他对周围不断逼近的邪恶的感受。

在下一节经文中，大卫断言，即使是黑暗对上帝来说也不是黑暗。上帝的品格是万能的，黑暗不会阻挡他的前进。对他来说，夜晚和白天一样明亮。上帝不仅掌控光明和黑暗，而且他是世界的光，跟随他的人“就不在黑暗里走，必要得着生命的光”（约翰福音 8:12）。
黑暗因祂的存在而被照亮。所以我们没有办法躲在黑暗中，也没有办法让黑暗战胜我们。祂的子民去到任何地方，那位能够进入所有地方并掌管他们的神也能去到任何地方。约翰福音 1:5 说：“光照在黑暗里，黑暗却不接受光。”换句话说，神之光的力量是如此强大，以至于黑暗和光明对祂来说都是一样的，同样受祂控制。这意味着，即使我们无法用肉眼感知到，神的光也始终与我们同在。
