为要追求义，就是正确和和谐的生活，我们必须藉着信作活祭般地生活 (正如保罗在第 1 节所说)。保罗在提倡改变的原则，这并不是一份任务清单。他支持态度，而非遵循规条。作活祭般地生活意思是谦卑，并使他人受益。很多谦卑来自认识神是神，而我们不是。神已经赐给我们拥有的一切，要作活祭般地生活，我们必须认识到我们是谁，以及我们所必须献上的一切都来自神。
我们被告诫要看事物的本质。把自己看得过高是我们的自然倾向，但神告诉我们要看到真实的自己，不多也不少。重要的是不要看自己过于所当看的；要看得合乎中道。我们要活出义的生命，这是极其重要的，因为义是身体的各个部分为整体的利益而工作。所以，如果我们说，"我只是一个小小的脚趾头，而小脚趾头不重要，因此，我就什么都不做"，这样身体就缺失了一个小脚趾头。任何一个伤过小脚趾头的人就会发现小脚趾头有多重要了。我们真的有必要认识到自己的恩赐，无论这恩赐是什么，不管这个世界是否尊重这一恩赐，都要使用它们来服侍他人。
我们很快就要学到，每个人都有一种可以用来服侍他人的恩赐，但要相信这一服侍对他人真的很重要，是需要信心的。而且神已经分给各人信心，让我们去操练。藉着运用我们所接受的恩赐来服侍他人，操练所赋予的信心，是我们作为活祭理所当然服侍中的一部分。
保罗继续谦卑的思想，即实事求是地看待事物，以及它对通过讨论我们信徒如何一起组成身体，藉着信活出和谐和公义生活的重要性。保罗使用身体的类比来解释，虽然我们各人拥有个体独特的恩赐，但理当一起组成凝聚的整体，我们一个身子上有好些肢体，肢体也不都是一样的用处。基督徒的生命不是独居。要公义地、和谐地与他人生活，我们必须持续地与他人一起团契相交。要和谐生活，我们必须谦卑地了解我们是身体上的哪一部分，同时也要有意识地欣赏和依靠身体上的其它肢体。我们这许多人，在基督里成为一身，互相联络作肢体，也是如此。
与其他信徒生活在一个集体里是我们每天、整天要做的事情，而非只是每周固定的时间内如此行。和谐生活是我们单方面做的事情，不论他人如何回应。
