保罗在第 4 节提到，当信徒在圣灵里行事时，就成全了律法。这是保罗反对在罗马毁谤他教导的、与之竞争的犹太 "权威" 之观点的重述。毁谤者声称自己是得胜者，解救律法脱离了保罗异端性的教导。保罗说，律法不再是我们的权柄，圣灵才是我们的权柄。
信徒有圣灵为帮助者 (约翰福音 14:16，17，26)，我们的软弱有圣灵帮助；圣灵帮助我们的方式之一是与神沟通。因为我们依然有罪性，且是软弱的，所以我们通常不知道如何与神交流，我们本不晓得当怎样祷告。所以，圣灵替我们祷告，他是我们的发声者、我们的帮助者，亲自用说不出来的叹息替我们与神交流。
一个简单的例子就是，保姆/儿童看护者可能需要受看护中一个较大孩子来帮助他们理解弟弟妹妹 (可能是 2-3 岁的幼儿) 的要求。我们是软弱不完全的，圣灵帮助我们 (在我们软弱时)，为我们代求。耶稣在十字架献祭中也为我们代求 (34 节)。同样地，圣灵以相同的方式赐给信徒，来为他们向神祷告。
所以，即使我们在世上经历苦难和磨难，但我们在软弱中有圣灵帮助我们。与那自称我们要遵行律法以称义的与之竞争的犹太 "权威" 相比，保罗坚持说，我们只能通过依靠基督和他的灵才能称义，获取新生和赦罪，且藉着复活的大能行在新生命中。
圣灵帮助我们软弱的方式之一是鉴察人心，好替我们代求，照着神的旨意，替我们向神交流 (27 节)。这对我们所有人而言是极大的鼓励。保罗已经告诉他的听众，圣灵所做的最重要的事情之一就是在信徒必死的身体里赐给他们生命，提供行神旨意的能力 (5-16 节)；替我们向神代求的能力是圣灵在我们软弱中帮助我们的另一种方式。
