从拿俄米人的角度来看，她现在和将来的生活看似都是无望的。在离开故乡后，当事情进展不顺时，，很自然就会想到回家；失去所爱的人放大了她的沮丧。拿俄米在摩押地听见耶和华眷顾自己的百姓，赐粮食与他们。耶和华解除饥荒的消息传到她那里，所以她迫切想回到以色列。所以她和两个儿妇起行离开所住的地方，要回犹大地去。犹大是伯利恒所在支派地区的名称。
因为年迈，拿俄米几乎没有再婚的指望了。然而，无私的是，她不想她的困境成为两个儿妇再婚，并拥有比她更美好未来的阻碍。所以，拿俄米劝她的儿妇们离开："你们各人回娘家去吧。"拿俄米给她们祝福，说"愿耶和华恩待你们，像你们恩待已死的人与我一样。"显然，她的儿妇们一直待她非常好。现在拿俄米希望善待她们，为她们寻求经济上的保障。她鼓励她们再婚，说"愿耶和华使你们各在新夫家中得平安。"
于是拿俄米与她们亲嘴，她们就放声而哭。
拿俄米认为此提议具有可行性。她们需要自己的丈夫和家庭。在农业经济和机械尚未出现的时代，那是寻求保护和维持生计所必需的。拿俄米无法为她们生养儿子。即便她能够生子，她们岂能等著他们长大呢？俄珥巴最终同意并回到摩押，只是路得舍不得拿俄米。
