现在拿俄米感觉到她自己没有丈夫，也没有儿子照顾她。其中一个摩押儿妇决定回到摩押她的娘家，然而路得选择留下来陪她。路得对拿俄米说，"不要催我回去不跟随你。你往哪里去，我也往那里去；你在哪里住宿，我也在那里住宿；你的国就是我的国，你的神就是我的神。你在哪里死，我也在那里死，也葬在那里。除非死能使你我相离！不然，愿耶和华重重地降罚与我。"这个承诺是一个十分令人惊讶的表述。
拿俄米见路得定意要跟随自己去，就不再反对了。
拿俄米和路得从摩押出发，走了大约60英里的路程，来到伯利恒。显然，伯利恒是个很小的村庄，因为她们到了伯利恒，合城的人就都惊讶。两个女人出现在城里可是个大新闻。虽然拿俄米离开已经十年了，但人们还记得她。这再次表明这个村庄很小而且没有多少变化。妇女们说："这是拿俄米吗？"
拿俄米回答这个问题时，对她名字的含义进行了发挥。她对他们说："不要叫我拿俄米，要叫我玛拉，因为全能者使我受了大苦"。她现在不再继续使用拿俄米这个名字（就是甜的意思），而是希望别人称她为玛拉（就是苦的意思）。
拿俄米并没有试图隐瞒她的损失。她告诉村里的妇女们，她满满地出去，耶和华使我空空地回来。拿俄米把她的灾难归咎于神，说"耶和华降祸与我。"
拿俄米选择回到伯利恒之时，正是动手割大麦的时候。
