In Proverbs 12:13, Solomon writes, An evil man is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, but the righteous will escape from trouble (v. 13). Once again, speech becomes a moral battleground. Wicked words do not merely hurt others; they also trap the speaker.
The transgression of his lips includes lies, slander, rash speech, and manipulative words. Such speech forms a snare because it creates consequences that return upon the one who spoke. Wickedness often collapses through the very instrument it used for harm.
The righteous, however, will escape from trouble. This does not mean they never face trials, but that righteousness protects them from many self-created traps. Truthful speech preserves because it aligns with reality. James 3 later expands this theme, showing how powerful the tongue is in directing life.
