In Proverbs 13:24, Solomon says, He who withholds his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently (v. 24). This proverb speaks about parental love expressed through correction. In Proverbs, discipline is not opposed to love; rightly used, it is one of love’s forms.
To withhold the rod is to refuse needed correction. Solomon says this is a kind of hatred because it abandons the child to folly. Love does not merely soothe; it forms. A parent who loves a son seeks his long-term good, not merely his momentary comfort.
The one who loves him disciplines him diligently. Diligent discipline is consistent, purposeful, and aimed at wisdom. Hebrews 12 reflects the same principle in describing God’s fatherly discipline of His children. Correction, when governed by love and truth, is a means of life.
