Em Provérbios 10:13, Salomão escreve: Nos lábios do entendido acha-se a sabedoria, mas a vara é para aquele que é falto de entendimento (v. 13). A pessoa sábia aprendeu a enxergar a realidade com clareza, e essa clareza torna-se audível em sua fala. A sabedoria pode ser percebida na maneira como ela fala.
Porque os sábios recebem instrução, não precisam de correções severas constantes. Suas próprias palavras refletem crescimento e maturidade. Tornaram-se o tipo de pessoa cuja fala revela ordem interior. A sabedoria nos lábios é a prova de que a sabedoria primeiro criou raízes no coração.
Aquele que não tem entendimento necessita da vara, porque não acolheu uma correção mais suave. A vara representa a disciplina mediante consequências. Quando a sabedoria é rejeitada, formas mais severas de instrução tornam-se necessárias. Hebreus 12 ensina mais adiante que Deus disciplina aqueles a quem ama, e que a disciplina visa à justiça.
