“In Bethlehem of Judea,” they told him, “because this is what was written by the prophet:
When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners? ”
When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “See, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.”
When the Pharisees heard this, they said, “This man drives out demons only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.”
Then the disciples came up and asked him, “Why are you speaking to them in parables? ”
“The landowner's servants came to him and said, ‘Master, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Then where did the weeds come from? '
“ ‘An enemy did this,' he told them.
“ ‘So, do you want us to go and pull them up? ' the servants asked him.
Then the disciples came up and told him, “Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said? ”
“How many loaves do you have? ” Jesus asked them.
“Seven,” they said, “and a few small fish.”
Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, “Why couldn't we drive it out? ”
When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the temple tax approached Peter and said, “Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax? ”
and said to him, “Do you hear what these children are saying? ”
Jesus replied, “Yes, have you never read:
You have prepared[fn] praise
from the mouths of infants and nursing babies? ”
So they answered Jesus, “We don't know.”
And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
“But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.'
“The foolish ones said to the wise ones, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.'
“Even if I have to die with you,” Peter told him, “I will never deny you,” and all the disciples said the same thing.
stated, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.' ”
After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, “You really are one of them, since even your accent[fn] gives you away.”
“I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said.
“What's that to us? ” they said. “See to it yourself! ”
The chief priests took the silver and said, “It's not permitted to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.”
A crowd was sitting around him and told him, “Look, your mother, your brothers, and your sisters[fn] are outside asking for you.”
“When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you collect? ”
“Seven,” they said.
“We are able,” they told him.
Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with.
“But those tenant farmers said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'
They brought a coin. “Whose image and inscription is this? ” he asked them.
“Caesar's,” they replied.
They went out and ran from the tomb, because trembling and astonishment overwhelmed them. And they said nothing to anyone, since they were afraid.

When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let's go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”
Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do? ”
Then they said to him, “John's disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink.”
But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath? ”
When the men reached him, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask you, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else? ' ”
Late in the day, the Twelve approached and said to him, “Send the crowd away, so that they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find food and lodging, because we are in a deserted place here.”
“You give them something to eat,” he told them.
“We have no more than five loaves and two fish,” they said, “unless we go and buy food for all these people.”
They answered, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back.”[fn]
When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them? ”[fn]
But some of them said, “He drives out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.”
As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt? ”
“He will come and kill those farmers and give the vineyard to others.”
But when they heard this they said, “That must never happen! ”
“Show me a denarius.[fn] Whose image and inscription does it have? ”
“Caesar's,” they said.
He also said to them, “When I sent you out without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything? ”
“Not a thing,” they said.
When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword? ”
They all asked, “Are you, then, the Son of God? ”
And he said to them, “You say that I am.”
“Why do we need any more testimony,” they said, “since we've heard it ourselves from his mouth? ”
So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.
“Why are you looking for the living among the dead? ” asked the men.
“What things? ” he asked them.
So they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,
“Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn't see him.”
They said to each other, “Weren't our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us? ”
“Who are you, then? ” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself? ”
So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren't the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet? ”
When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for? ”
They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying? ”
Therefore the Jews said, “This temple took forty-six years to build,[fn] and will you raise it up in three days? ”
So they came to John and told him, “Rabbi, the one you testified about, and who was with you across the Jordan, is baptizing — and everyone is going to him.”
He asked them at what time he got better. “Yesterday at one in the afternoon[fn] the fever left him,” they answered.
When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here? ”
“What sign, then, are you going to do so that we may see and believe you? ” they asked. “What are you going to perform?
Therefore, when many of his disciples heard this, they said, “This teaching is hard. Who can accept[fn] it? ”
So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea so that your disciples can see your works that you are doing.
Then the Jews said to one another, “Where does he intend to go that we won't find him? He doesn't intend to go to the Jewish people dispersed[fn] among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does he?
Then the servants came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn't you bring him? ”
“You aren't from Galilee too, are you? ” they replied. “Investigate and you will see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”
So the Pharisees said to him, “You are testifying about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”
“Our father is Abraham,” they replied.
“If you were Abraham's children,” Jesus told them, “you would do what Abraham did.
“You're doing what your father does.”
“We weren't born of sexual immorality,” they said. “We have one Father — God.”
The Jews responded to him, “Aren't we right in saying that you're a Samaritan and have a demon? ”
Then the Jews said, “Now we know you have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.'
His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, since the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him as the Messiah, he would be banned from the synagogue.
So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”
“You were born entirely in sin,” they replied, “and are you trying to teach us? ” Then they threw him out.
Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him, “We aren't blind too, are we? ”
But some of them said, “Couldn't he who opened the blind man's eyes also have kept this man from dying? ”
Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You see? You've accomplished nothing. Look, the world has gone after him! ”
Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this he's telling us: ‘In a little while, you will not see me; again in a little while, you will see me,' and, ‘Because I am going to the Father'? ”
Then he asked them again, “Who is it that you're seeking? ”
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, “You aren't one of his disciples too, are you? ”
He denied it and said, “I am not.”
They answered him, “If this man weren't a criminal,[fn] we wouldn't have handed him over to you.”
Pilate told them, “You take him and judge him according to your law.”
“It's not legal for us to put anyone to death,” the Jews declared.
So they said to one another, “Let's not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided my clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing. This is what the soldiers did.
They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen him going into heaven.”
Then they prayed, “You, Lord, know everyone's hearts; show which of these two you have chosen
Peter and John answered them, “Whether it's right in the sight of God for us to listen to you rather than to God, you decide;
After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
When they heard this, they raised their voices together to God and said, “Master, you are the one who made the heaven, the earth, and the sea, and everything in them.
The Twelve summoned the whole company of the disciples and said, “It would not be right for us to give up preaching the word of God to wait on tables.
They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who has a good reputation with the whole Jewish nation, was divinely directed by a holy angel to call you to his house and to hear a message from you.”
“You're out of your mind! ” they told her. But she kept insisting that it was true, and they said, “It's his angel.”
Paul and Barnabas boldly replied, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. Since you reject it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we are turning to the Gentiles.
Bringing them before the chief magistrates, they said, “These men are seriously disturbing our city. They are Jews
They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved — you and your household.”
When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to ridicule him, but others said, “We'd like to hear from you again about this.”
“Into what then were you baptized? ” he asked them.
“Into John's baptism,” they replied.
These men went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have bound ourselves under a solemn curse that we won't eat anything until we have killed Paul.
“Why is it you don't understand that when I told you, ‘Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees,' it wasn't about bread? ”
“Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there.' Listen, I have told you.”
“Whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't.”
(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.' ”)
“This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.'
“If I have told you about earthly things and you don't believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?
“You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I've been sent ahead of him.'
“Therefore I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.”
“do you say, ‘You are blaspheming' to the one the Father set apart and sent into the world, because I said: I am the Son of God?
“I know that you always hear me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so that they may believe you sent me.”
“Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so now I tell you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.'
“In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?
“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.
“You have heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I am coming to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.
“Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
“But I have told you these things so that when their time[fn] comes you will remember I told them to you. I didn't tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
“Everything the Father has is mine. This is why I told you that he takes from what is mine and will declare it to you.
Jesus knew they wanted to ask him, and so he said to them, “Are you asking one another about what I said, ‘In a little while, you will not see me; again in a little while, you will see me'?
“Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I told them. Look, they know what I said.”
“ ‘No, Lord! ' I said. ‘For nothing impure or ritually unclean has ever entered my mouth.'
“I said, ‘What should I do, Lord? '
“The Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told everything that you have been assigned to do.'
“But I said, ‘Lord, they know that in synagogue after synagogue I had those who believed in you imprisoned and beaten.
“I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord? '
“And the Lord replied, ‘I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting.
for forty years.
Therefore I was provoked to anger with that generation
and said, “They always go astray in their hearts,
and they have not known my ways.”
