“So I was afraid and went off and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.'

Looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come,[fn] follow me.”

“Then I'll say to myself, “You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.” '

When Jesus heard this, he told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell all you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

“Sir,” said the woman, “you don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water'?

“For you've had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”

Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life.

“You have a demon! ” the crowd responded. “Who is trying to kill you? ”

The Jews responded to him, “Aren't we right in saying that you're a Samaritan and have a demon? ”

Then the Jews said, “Now we know you have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.'

The Jews replied, “You aren't fifty years old yet, and you've seen Abraham? ”[fn]

“You will never wash my feet,” Peter said.

Jesus replied, “If I don't wash you, you have no part with me.”

“Now we know that you know everything and don't need anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came from God.”

The commander took him by the hand, led him aside, and inquired privately, “What is it you have to report to me? ”

Whatever you believe about these things, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves.

For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you didn't receive? If, in fact, you did receive it, why do you boast as if you hadn't received it?

because I hear of your love for all the saints and the faith that you have in the Lord Jesus.

So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would me.

But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.”[fn] Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works.

“Write to the angel[fn] of the church in Sardis: Thus says the one who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars: I know your works; you have a reputation[fn] for being alive, but you are dead.

“But you have a few people[fn] in Sardis who have not defiled[fn] their clothes, and they will walk with me in white, because they are worthy.

“I know your works. Look, I have placed before you an open door that no one can close because you have but little power; yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one takes your crown.
