“In the future when you come to check on my wages, my honesty will testify for me. If I have any female goats that are not speckled or spotted, or any lambs that are not black, they will be considered stolen.”
I gave them this reply, “The God of the heavens is the one who will grant us success. We, his servants, will start building, but you have no share, right, or historic claim in Jerusalem.”
Your wickedness affects a person like yourself,
and your righteousness, a son of man.[fn]
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
your judgments like the deepest sea.
LORD, you preserve people and animals.
Will your wonders be known in the darkness
or your righteousness in the land of oblivion?
Righteousness and justice are the foundation
of your throne;
faithful love and truth go before you.
for the administration of justice will again be righteous,

Clouds and total darkness surround him;

The result of righteousness will be peace;
the effect of righteousness
will be quiet confidence forever.
Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good,” for he thought: There will be peace and security during my lifetime.
“By myself I have sworn;
truth has gone from my mouth,
a word that will not be revoked:
Every knee will bow to me,
every tongue will swear allegiance.
“It will be said about me, ‘Righteousness and strength
are found only in the LORD.' ”
All who are enraged against him
will come to him and be put to shame.
If only you had paid attention to my commands.
Then your peace would have been like a river,
and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
My righteousness is near,
my salvation appears,
and my arms will bring justice to the nations.
The coasts and islands will put their hope in me,
and they will look to my strength.[fn]

and my righteousness will never be shattered.
For moths will devour them like a garment,

and my salvation for all generations.
“Then your light will appear like the dawn,
and your recovery will come quickly.
Your righteousness will go before you,
and the LORD's glory will be your rear guard.
Therefore justice is far from us,
and righteousness does not reach us.
We hope for light, but there is darkness;
for brightness, but we live in the night.
Justice is turned back,
and righteousness stands far off.
For truth has stumbled in the public square,
and honesty cannot enter.
I will not keep silent because of Zion,
and I will not keep still because of Jerusalem,
until her righteousness shines like a bright light
and her salvation, like a flaming torch.
All of us have become like something unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like a polluted[fn] garment;
all of us wither like a leaf,
and our iniquities carry us away like the wind.
“The person who sins is the one who will die. A son won't suffer punishment for the father's iniquity, and a father won't suffer punishment for the son's iniquity. The righteousness of the righteous person will be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked person will be on him.
“Now, son of man, say to your people, ‘The righteousness of the righteous person will not save him on the day of his transgression; neither will the wickedness of the wicked person cause him to stumble on the day he turns from his wickedness. The righteous person won't be able to survive by his righteousness on the day he sins.
In the rebellion, the army was given up, together with the regular sacrifice. The horn threw truth to the ground and was successful in what it did.
Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but this day public shame belongs to us: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel — those who are near and those who are far, in all the countries where you have banished them because of the disloyalty they have shown toward you.
