Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
“He trusts in God; let God rescue him now — if he takes pleasure in him![fn] For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.' ”
Calling the crowd along with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
Sitting down, he called the Twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all.”
“And no one, after drinking old wine, wants new, because he says, ‘The old is better.' ”[fn]
At that time some Pharisees came and told him, “Go, get out of here. Herod wants to kill you.”
“The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don't know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
“And just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom he wants.
So then, he has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy and he hardens whom he wants to harden.
If any man thinks he is acting improperly toward the virgin he is engaged to, if she is getting beyond the usual age for marriage, and he feels he should marry — he can do what he wants. He is not sinning; they can get married.
A wife is bound[fn] as long as her husband is living. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to anyone she wants — only in the Lord.
In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you: “If anyone isn't willing to work, he should not eat.”
