“Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn't come to call the righteous, but sinners.”[fn]

“If you had known what this means, I desire mercy and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the innocent.

Jesus called his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they've already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry, otherwise they might collapse on the way.”

“Take what's yours and go. I want to give this last man the same as I gave you.

“He answered, ‘I don't want to,' but later he changed his mind and went.

Going a little farther,[fn] he fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

And he said, “Abba,[fn] Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.”

“I came to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze!

“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world's foundation.

Now I don't want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I often planned to come to you (but was prevented until now) in order that I might have a fruitful ministry[fn] among you, just as I have had among the rest of the Gentiles.

For I do not understand what I am doing, because I do not practice what I want to do, but I do what I hate.

For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do.

I don't want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you will not be conceited: A partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

The report of your obedience has reached everyone. Therefore I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise about what is good, and yet innocent about what is evil.

I wish that all people were as I am. But each has his own gift from God, one person has this gift, another has that.

I want you to be without concerns. The unmarried man is concerned about the things of the Lord ​— ​how he may please the Lord.

Now I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, all passed through the sea,

No, but I do say that what they[fn] sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons!

But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of the woman,[fn] and God is the head of Christ.

Now concerning spiritual gifts:[fn] brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be unaware.

I wish all of you spoke in tongues,[fn] but even more that you prophesied. The person who prophesies is greater than the person who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be built up.

yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, in order to teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

I don't want to see you now just in passing, since I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord allows.

For I fear that perhaps when I come I will not find you to be what I want, and you may not find me to be what you want. Perhaps there will be quarreling, jealousy, angry outbursts, selfish ambitions, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder.

I only want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by believing what you heard?[fn]

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.

I have many things to write you, but I don't want to write to you with pen and ink.

The devil said to him, “I will give you their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me, and I can give it to anyone I want.
