“But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth[fn] of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass[fn] justice and love for God.[fn] These things you should have done without neglecting the others.

“but I know you ​— ​that you have no love for God within you.

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

“No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.

But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

For if your brother or sister is hurt by what you eat, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not destroy, by what you eat, someone for whom Christ died.

If I speak human or angelic tongues[fn] but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

Pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, and especially that you may prophesy.

For I wrote to you with many tears out of an extremely troubled and anguished heart ​— ​not to cause you pain, but that you should know the abundant love I have for you.

Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him.

This is why, since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us,[fn]

This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us.

God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.

“But I have this against you: You have abandoned the love you had at first.

“I know your works ​— ​your love, faithfulness,[fn] service, and endurance. I know that your last works are greater than the first.
