So her husband, Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly.
As he was telling them these things, suddenly one of the leaders came and knelt down before him, saying, “My daughter just died,[fn] but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
“and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it; but if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you.
“Anyone who finds his life will lose it, and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it.
“From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been suffering violence,[fn] and the violent have been seizing it by force.
“The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah's preaching; and look — something greater than Jonah is here.
“The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and look — something greater than Solomon is here.
Jesus did not say a word to her. His disciples approached him and urged him, “Send her away because she's crying out after us.”
“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it.
“Why then,” they asked him, “did Moses command us to give divorce papers and to send her away? ”
Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, he went up to it and found nothing on it except leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again! ” At once the fig tree withered.
“In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had married her.”[fn]
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks[fn] under her wings, but you were not willing!
Although the king was deeply distressed, because of his oaths and the guests[fn] he did not want to refuse her.
“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me and the gospel will save it.
“And if your hand causes you to fall away, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and go to hell, the unquenchable fire.[fn]
He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.
“Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive[fn] the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
“The second also took her, and he died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise.
Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing for me.
The devil said to him, “I will give you their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me, and I can give it to anyone I want.
So he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and began to serve them.
“He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn't shake it, because it was well built.
Everyone was crying and mourning for her. But he said, “Stop crying, because she is not dead but asleep.”
“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it.
“The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah's preaching, and look — something greater than Jonah is here.
“He told the vineyard worker, ‘Listen, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it even waste the soil? '
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!
“Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
“Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. Those inside the city must leave it, and those who are in the country must not enter it,
“This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so that I may take it up again.
“No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”
The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. They followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to cry there.
“The one who loves his life will lose it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
Then Peter said to her, “Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”
He gave her his hand and helped her stand up. He called the saints and widows and presented her alive.
“After these things I will return
and rebuild David's fallen tent.
I will rebuild its ruins
and set it up again,
But I (not the Lord) say to the rest: If any brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.
For you have heard about my former way of life in Judaism: I intensely persecuted God's church and tried to destroy it.
For no one ever hates his own flesh but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church,
Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news did not enter because of disobedience,
For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, even though he sought it with tears, because he didn't find any opportunity for repentance.
I have not written to you because you don't know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie comes from the truth.
“I know your works. Look, I have placed before you an open door that no one can close because you have but little power; yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
Then the angel said to me, “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast, with the seven heads and the ten horns, that carries her.
For this reason her plagues will come in just one day —
death and grief and famine.
She will be burned up with fire,
because the Lord God who judges her is mighty.
The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargo any longer —
The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates it, and its lamp is the Lamb.
The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.[fn]
