Saul Among the Prophets

1 Then Samuel ^H8050 took ^H3947 the flask ^H6378 of oil ^H8081, poured ^H3332 it on his head ^H7218, kissed ^H5401 him, and said ^H559, “Has not Yahweh ^H3068 anointed ^H4886 you a ruler ^H5057 over ^H5921 His inheritance ^H5159?

2 When you go ^H1980 from me today ^H3117, then you will find ^H4672 two ^H8147 men ^H376 close ^H5973 to Rachel’s ^H7354 tomb ^H6900 in the territory ^H1366 of Benjamin ^H1144 at Zelzah ^H6766; and they will say ^H559 to you, ‘The donkeys ^H860 which ^H834 you went ^H1980 to search ^H1245 for ^H1245 have been found ^H4672. 14 Now Saul’s ^H7586 uncle ^H1730 said ^H559 to him and his young ^H5288 man ^H5288, “Where ^H575 did you go ^H1980?” And he said ^H559, “To look ^H1245 for ^H1245 the donkeys ^H860. 17 Then Samuel ^H8050 called ^H6817 the people ^H5971 together ^H6817 to Yahweh ^H3068 at Mizpah ^H4709;

18 and he said ^H559 to the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, ‘I brought ^H5927 Israel ^H3478 up ^H5927 from Egypt ^H4714, and I delivered ^H5337 you from the hand ^H3027 of the Egyptians ^H4714 and from the hand ^H3027 of all ^H3605 the kingdoms ^H4467 that were oppressing ^H3905 you.’ 19 But you have today ^H3117 rejected ^H3988 your God ^H430, who ^H834 saves ^H3467 you from all ^H3605 your calamities ^H7451 and your distresses ^H6869; yet you have [fn]said ^H559, ‘No ^H3808, but set ^H7760 a king ^H4428 over ^H5921 us!’ So now ^H6258, take ^H3320 your stand ^H3320 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068 by your tribes ^H7626 and by your clans ^H505.”

20 Thus Samuel ^H8050 brought ^H7126 all ^H3605 the tribes ^H7626 of Israel ^H3478 near ^H7126, and the tribe ^H7626 of Benjamin ^H1144 was taken ^H3920 by lot. 21 Then he brought ^H7126 the tribe ^H7626 of Benjamin ^H1144 near ^H7126 by its families ^H4940, and the Matrite ^H4309 family ^H4940 was taken ^H3920. And Saul ^H7586 the son ^H1121 of Kish ^H7027 was taken ^H3920; but they looked ^H1245 for ^H1245 him, and he could not be found ^H4672. 22 Therefore they inquired ^H7592 further ^H5750 of Yahweh ^H3068, “Has the man ^H376 come ^H935 here ^H1988 yet ^H5750?” So Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559, “Behold ^H2009, he is hiding ^H2244 himself ^H1931 by the baggage ^H3627.” 23 So they ran ^H7323 and took ^H3947 him from there ^H8033, and he stood ^H3320 among ^H8432 the people ^H5971. And he was ^H1361 taller ^H1361 than ^H4480 any ^H3605 of the people ^H5971 from his shoulders ^H7926 upward ^H4605. 24 And Samuel ^H8050 said ^H559 to all ^H3605 the people ^H5971, “Do you see ^H7200 him whom ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 has chosen ^H977? Surely ^H3588 there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 one ^H369 like ^H3644 him among all ^H3605 the people ^H5971.” So all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 shouted ^H7321 and said ^H559, “[fn]Long live ^H2421 the king ^H4428!”

25 Then Samuel ^H8050 spoke ^H1696 with the people ^H5971 about the legal judgments ^H4941 of the kingdom ^H4410 and wrote ^H3789 them in the book ^H5612 and placed ^H5117 it before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068. And Samuel ^H8050 sent ^H7971 all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 away ^H7971, each ^H376 one ^H376 to his house ^H1004. 26 Saul ^H7586 also ^H1571 went ^H1980 to his house ^H1004 at Gibeah ^H1390; and the valiant ^H2428 men whose ^H834 hearts ^H3820 God ^H430 had touched ^H5060 went ^H1980 with him. 27 But certain [fn]vile ^H1100 men ^H1121 said ^H559, “How ^H4100 can this ^H2088 one ^H2088 save ^H3467 us?” And they despised ^H959 him and did not bring ^H935 him any present ^H4503. But he kept ^H2790 silent ^H2790.
