Judgments About Property Rights

1 “[fn]If ^H3588 a man ^H376 steals ^H1589 an ox ^H7794 or ^H176 a sheep ^H7716 and slaughters ^H2873 it or ^H176 sells ^H4376 it, he shall pay ^H7999 five ^H2568 oxen ^H1241 for the ox ^H7794 and four ^H702 sheep ^H6629 for the sheep ^H7716.

2 “[fn]If ^H518 the thief ^H1590 is [fn]caught ^H4672 while breaking ^H4290 in ^H4290 and is struck ^H5221 so that he dies ^H4191, there ^H369 will ^H369 be ^H369 no ^H369 bloodguiltiness ^H1818 on his account.

3 But if ^H518 the sun ^H8121 has risen ^H2224 on him, there will be bloodguiltiness ^H1818 on his account. He shall surely ^H7999 make ^H7999 restitution ^H7999; if ^H518 he owns nothing ^H369, then he shall be sold ^H4376 for his theft ^H1591. 4 If ^H518 what ^H1591 he stole ^H1591 is actually ^H4672 found ^H4672 alive ^H2416 in his hand ^H3027, whether ^H4480 an ox ^H7794 or ^H5704 a donkey ^H2543 or ^H5704 a sheep ^H7716, he shall pay ^H7999 double ^H8147.

5 “If ^H3588 a man ^H376 lets a field ^H7704 or ^H176 vineyard ^H3754 be grazed ^H1197 bare and lets ^H7971 his animal ^H1165 loose ^H7971 so that it grazes ^H1197 in another ^H312 man’s field ^H7704, he shall make ^H7999 restitution ^H7999 from the best ^H4315 of his own field ^H7704 and the best ^H4315 of his own vineyard ^H3754.

6 “If ^H3588 a fire ^H784 breaks ^H3318 out ^H3318 and spreads ^H4672 to ^H4672 thorn ^H6975 bushes ^H6975, so that stacked ^H1430 grain or ^H176 the standing ^H7054 grain ^H7054 or ^H176 the field ^H7704 itself is consumed ^H398, he who started ^H1197 the fire ^H1200 shall surely ^H7999 make ^H7999 restitution ^H7999.

7 “If ^H3588 a man ^H376 gives ^H5414 his neighbor ^H7453 money ^H3701 or ^H176 goods ^H3627 to keep ^H8104 for him and it is stolen ^H1589 from the man’s ^H376 house ^H1004, if ^H518 the thief ^H1590 is [fn]caught ^H4672, he shall pay ^H7999 double ^H8147. 8 If ^H518 the thief ^H1590 is not [fn]caught ^H4672, then the owner ^H1167 of the house ^H1004 shall [fn]appear ^H7126 before ^H413 [fn]the judges ^H430 to determine whether ^H518 H3808 he [fn]laid ^H7971 his hands ^H3027 on his neighbor’s ^H7453 property ^H4399. 9 For every ^H3605 [fn]breach ^H6588 of ^H6588 trust ^H6588, whether it is for ox ^H7794, for donkey ^H2543, for sheep ^H7716, for clothing ^H8008, or for any ^H3605 lost ^H9 thing ^H9 about which ^H834 one says ^H559, ‘This ^H2088 is it,’ the [fn]case ^H1697 of both ^H8147 parties shall come ^H935 before ^H5704 [fn]the judges ^H430; he whom ^H834 [fn]the judges ^H430 condemn ^H7561 shall pay ^H7999 double ^H8147 to his neighbor ^H7453.

10 “If ^H3588 a man ^H376 gives ^H5414 his neighbor ^H7453 a donkey ^H2543, an ox ^H7794, a sheep ^H7716, or ^H176 any ^H3605 animal ^H929 to keep ^H8104 for him, and it dies ^H4191 or ^H176 is injured ^H7665 or ^H176 is driven ^H7617 away ^H7617 while no ^H369 one ^H369 is looking ^H7200, 11 then an oath ^H7621 before Yahweh ^H3068 shall be made ^H1961 by the two ^H8147 of them [fn]that he has not [fn]laid ^H7971 hands ^H3027 on his neighbor’s ^H7453 property ^H4399; and its owner ^H1167 shall accept ^H3947 it, and he shall not make ^H7999 restitution ^H7999. 12 But if ^H518 it is actually ^H1589 stolen ^H1589 from him, he shall make ^H7999 restitution ^H7999 to its owner ^H1167. 13 Now if ^H518 it is all torn ^H2963 to ^H2963 pieces ^H2963, let him bring ^H935 it as evidence ^H5707; he shall not make ^H7999 restitution ^H7999 for what has been torn ^H2966 to pieces.

14 “If ^H3588 a man ^H376 [fn]borrows ^H7592 anything from his neighbor ^H7453, and it is injured ^H7665 or ^H176 dies ^H4191 while its owner ^H1167 is not with it, he shall make ^H7999 full ^H7999 restitution ^H7999. 15 But if ^H518 its owner ^H1167 is with it, he shall not make ^H7999 restitution ^H7999; if ^H518 it is hired ^H7916, it came ^H935 for its hire ^H7939.

Various Judgments

16 “If ^H3588 a man ^H376 seduces ^H6601 a virgin ^H1330 who ^H834 is not engaged ^H781 and lies ^H7901 with her, he must pay ^H4117 a ^H4117 dowry ^H4117 for her to be his wife ^H802.

17 If ^H518 her father ^H1 absolutely ^H3985 refuses ^H3985 to give ^H5414 her to him, he shall [fn]pay ^H8254 money ^H3701 equal to the dowry ^H4119 for virgins ^H1330.

18 “You shall not allow a sorceress ^H3784 to live ^H2421.

19 “Whoever ^H3605 lies ^H7901 with an animal ^H929 shall surely ^H4191 be put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191.

20 “And he who sacrifices ^H2076 to [fn]any god ^H430, other ^H1115 than ^H1115 to Yahweh ^H3068 alone ^H905, shall be [fn]devoted ^H2763 to destruction ^H2763.

21 “You shall not mistreat ^H3238 a sojourner ^H1616 or oppress ^H3905 him, for you were sojourners ^H1616 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714. 22 You shall not afflict ^H6031 any ^H3605 widow ^H490 or orphan ^H3490. 23 And if ^H518 you indeed ^H6031 afflict ^H6031 him, and if ^H518 he earnestly ^H6817 cries ^H6817 out ^H6817 to Me, I will surely ^H8085 hear ^H8085 his cry ^H6818; 24 and My anger ^H639 will burn ^H2734, and I will kill ^H2026 you with the sword ^H2719, and your wives ^H802 shall become ^H1961 widows ^H490 and your children ^H1121 fatherless ^H3490.

25 “If ^H518 you lend ^H3867 money ^H3701 to My people ^H5971, to the afflicted ^H6041 [fn]among ^H5973 you, you are not to [fn]act ^H1961 as a creditor ^H5383 to him; you shall not [fn]charge ^H7760 H5921 him interest ^H5392. 26 If ^H518 you ever ^H2254 take ^H2254 your neighbor’s ^H7453 cloak ^H8008 as ^H2254 a ^H2254 pledge ^H2254, you shall return ^H7725 it to him before ^H5704 the sun ^H8121 sets ^H935, 27 for that is his only ^H905 covering ^H3682; it is his cloak ^H8071 for his [fn]body ^H5785. What ^H4100 else shall he sleep ^H7901 in? And it shall be ^H1961 that when ^H3588 he cries ^H6817 out ^H6817 to Me, I will hear ^H8085 him, for I am gracious ^H2587.

28 “You shall not [fn]curse ^H7043 God ^H430, nor ^H3808 curse ^H779 a ruler ^H5387 of your people ^H5971.

29 “You shall not delay ^H309 the offering from [fn]the fullness ^H4395 of your harvest ^H4395 and the juice ^H1831 of your wine vat ^H1831. The firstborn ^H1060 of your sons ^H1121 you shall give ^H5414 to Me. 30 And you shall do ^H6213 the same ^H3651 with your oxen ^H7794 and with your sheep ^H6629. It shall be with its mother ^H517 seven ^H7651 days ^H3117; on the eighth ^H8066 day ^H3117 you shall give ^H5414 it to Me.

31 “You shall be holy ^H6944 men ^H376 to Me, therefore you shall not eat ^H398 any flesh ^H1320 torn ^H2966 to ^H2966 pieces ^H2966 in the field ^H7704; you shall throw ^H7993 it to the dogs ^H3611.
