The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

1 O foolish ^G453 Galatians ^G1052, who ^G5101 bewitched ^G940 you, before ^G2596 whose ^G3739 eyes ^G3788 Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547 was publicly ^G4270 portrayed ^G4270 as crucified ^G4717?

2 This ^G3778 is the only ^G3441 thing ^G3441 I want ^G2309 to learn ^G3129 from you: did you receive ^G2983 the Spirit ^G4151 by the works ^G2041 of [fn]the Law ^G3551, or ^G2228 by [fn]hearing ^G189 with faith ^G4102? 3 Are you so ^G3779 foolish ^G453? Having begun ^G1728 [fn]by the Spirit ^G4151, are you now ^G3568 [fn]being perfected ^G2005 by the flesh ^G4561? 4 Did you [fn]suffer ^G3958 so ^G5118 many ^G5118 things ^G5118 for nothing ^G1500—if ^G1487 indeed ^G1065 G2532 it was for nothing ^G1500? 5 So ^G3767 then ^G3767, does He who provides ^G2023 you with the Spirit ^G4151 and works ^G1754 [fn]miracles ^G1411 among ^G1722 you, do it by the works ^G2041 of [fn]the Law ^G3551, or ^G2228 by [fn]hearing ^G189 with faith ^G4102?

6 Just ^G2531 as ^G2531 Abraham ^G11 BELIEVED ^G4100 GOD ^G2316 AND IT WAS COUNTED ^G3049 TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS ^G1343, 7 so ^G686 know ^G1097 that those ^G3588 who are of faith ^G4102, those ^G3778 are sons ^G5207 of Abraham ^G11. 8 And the Scripture ^G1124, foreseeing ^G4275 that God ^G2316 [fn]would justify ^G1344 the [fn]Gentiles ^G1484 by faith ^G4102, proclaimed ^G4283 the gospel ^G4283 beforehand ^G4283 to Abraham ^G11, saying, “ALL ^G3956 THE NATIONS ^G1484 WILL BE BLESSED ^G1757 IN YOU.” 9 So ^G5620 then ^G5620 those ^G3588 who are of faith ^G4102 are blessed ^G2127 with [fn]Abraham ^G11, the believer ^G4103.

10 For as many ^G3745 as are of the works ^G2041 of [fn]the Law ^G3551 are under ^G5259 a curse ^G2671, for it is written ^G1125, “CURSED ^G1944 IS EVERYONE ^G3956 WHO ^G3739 DOES NOT ABIDE ^G1696 BY ^G1696 ALL ^G3956 THINGS ^G3956 WRITTEN ^G1125 IN THE BOOK ^G975 OF THE LAW ^G3551, TO DO ^G4160 THEM.” 11 Now ^G1161 that no ^G3762 one ^G3762 is justified ^G1344 [fn]by [fn]the Law ^G3551 before ^G3844 God ^G2316 is evident ^G1212, [fn]for “THE RIGHTEOUS ^G1342 SHALL LIVE ^G2198 BY FAITH ^G4102.” 12 [fn]However ^G1161, the Law ^G3551 is not [fn]of faith ^G4102; rather ^G235, “HE WHO DOES ^G4160 THEM SHALL LIVE ^G2198 [fn]BY THEM.” 13 Christ ^G5547 redeemed ^G1805 us from the curse ^G2671 of the Law ^G3551, having become ^G1096 a curse ^G2671 for us—for it is written ^G1125, “CURSED ^G1944 IS EVERYONE ^G3956 WHO HANGS ^G2910 ON A [fn]TREE ^G3586”— 14 in ^G2443 order ^G2443 that ^G2443 in Christ ^G5547 Jesus ^G2424 the blessing ^G2129 of Abraham ^G11 might [fn]come ^G1096 to the Gentiles ^G1484, so ^G2443 that we would receive ^G2983 the promise ^G1860 of the Spirit ^G4151 through ^G1223 faith ^G4102.

The Promise by Faith

He does not say ^G3004, “And to seeds ^G4690,” as referring to many ^G4183, but rather to one ^G1520, “And TO YOUR SEED ^G4690,” that is, Christ ^G5547. 17 And what I am saying ^G3004 is this ^G3778: the Law ^G3551, which came ^G1096 430 ^G5071 G5144 years ^G2094 later ^G3326, does not invalidate ^G208 a covenant ^G1242 previously ^G4300 ratified ^G4300 by God ^G2316, so ^G1519 as to abolish ^G2673 the promise ^G1860. 18 For if ^G1487 the inheritance ^G2817 is by ^G1537 law ^G3551, it is no ^G3765 longer ^G3765 by ^G1537 promise ^G1860, but God ^G2316 has granted ^G5483 it to Abraham ^G11 through ^G1223 promise ^G1860.

19 Why ^G5101 the Law ^G3551 then ^G3767? For if ^G1487 a law ^G3551 had been given ^G1325 which was able ^G1410 to impart ^G2227 life ^G2227, then righteousness ^G1343 would indeed ^G3689 be ^G1510 by ^G1537 law ^G3551. 22 But the Scripture ^G1124 has shut ^G4788 up ^G4788 [fn]everyone ^G3956 under ^G5259 sin ^G266, so ^G2443 that the promise ^G1860 by faith ^G4102 in Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547 might be given ^G1325 to those ^G3588 who believe ^G4100.

23 But before ^G4253 faith ^G4102 came ^G2064, we were held ^G5432 in ^G5432 custody ^G5432 under ^G5259 the Law ^G3551, being shut ^G4788 up ^G4788 for the coming ^G3195 faith ^G4102 to be revealed ^G601. 24 Therefore ^G5620 the Law ^G3551 has become ^G1096 our tutor ^G3807 unto Christ ^G5547, so ^G2443 that we may be justified ^G1344 by faith ^G4102. 25 But now ^G1161 that faith ^G4102 has come ^G2064, we are no ^G3765 longer ^G3765 under ^G5259 a [fn]tutor ^G3807. 26 For you are all ^G3956 sons ^G5207 of God ^G2316 through ^G1223 faith ^G4102 in Christ ^G5547 Jesus ^G2424. 27 For all ^G3745 of you who ^G3745 were baptized ^G907 into Christ ^G5547 have clothed ^G1746 yourselves with Christ ^G5547. 28 There ^G1762 is ^G1762 neither ^G3756 G1762 Jew ^G2453 nor ^G3761 Greek ^G1672, there ^G1762 is ^G1762 neither ^G3756 G1762 slave ^G1401 nor ^G3761 free ^G1658 man ^G1658, there ^G1762 is ^G1762 no ^G3756 G1762 male ^G730 and ^G2532 female ^G2338, for you are all ^G3956 one ^G1520 in Christ ^G5547 Jesus ^G2424. 29 And if ^G1487 you [fn]belong to Christ ^G5547, then ^G686 you are Abraham’s ^G11 [fn]seed ^G4690, heirs ^G2818 according ^G2596 to promise ^G1860.
