The Broken Jar

1 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, “Go ^H1980 and buy ^H7069 a potter’s ^H3335 earthenware ^H2789 jar ^H1228, and take some ^H4480 of the elders ^H2205 of the people ^H5971 and some ^H4480 of the elders ^H2205 of the priests ^H3548.

2 Then go ^H3318 out ^H3318 to the valley ^H1516 of Ben-hinnom ^H1121 H2011, which ^H834 is by the entrance ^H6607 of the potsherd ^H2777 gate ^H8179, and there ^H8033 call ^H7121 out ^H7121 the words ^H1697 that I tell ^H1696 you 3 and say ^H559, ‘Hear ^H8085 the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068, O kings ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 and inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389: thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, “Behold ^H2009, I am about to bring ^H935 a calamity ^H7451 upon this ^H2088 place ^H4725, at which ^H834 the ears ^H241 of everyone ^H3605 that hears ^H8085 of it will tingle ^H6750. 4 Because ^H3282 H834 they have forsaken ^H5800 Me and have made ^H5234 this ^H2088 a foreign ^H5234 place ^H4725 and have burned ^H6999 incense ^H6999 in it to other ^H312 gods ^H430, that neither ^H3808 they nor ^H3808 their fathers ^H1 nor ^H3808 the kings ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 had ever known ^H3045, and because they have filled ^H4390 this ^H2088 place ^H4725 with the blood ^H1818 of the innocent ^H5355 5 and have built ^H1129 the high ^H1116 places ^H1116 of Baal ^H1168 to burn ^H8313 their sons ^H1121 in the fire ^H784 as burnt ^H5930 offerings ^H5930 to Baal ^H1168, a thing which ^H834 I never ^H3808 commanded ^H6680 or spoke ^H1696 of, nor ^H3808 did it ever come ^H5927 upon My heart ^H3820, 6 therefore ^H3651, behold ^H2009, days ^H3117 are coming ^H935,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068, “when this ^H2088 place ^H4725 will no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 be called ^H7121 Topheth ^H8612 or the valley ^H1516 of Ben-hinnom ^H1121 H2011, but rather ^H3588 H518 the valley ^H1516 of Slaughter ^H2028. 7 I will empty ^H1238 out the counsel ^H6098 of Judah ^H3063 and Jerusalem ^H3389 to the point of destruction ^H1238 in this ^H2088 place ^H4725, and I will cause them to fall ^H5307 by the sword ^H2719 before ^H6440 their enemies ^H340 and by the hand ^H3027 of those who seek ^H1245 their life ^H5315; and I will give ^H5414 over their carcasses ^H5038 as food ^H3978 for the birds ^H5775 of the sky ^H8064 and the beasts ^H929 of the earth ^H776. 8 I will also make ^H7760 this ^H2088 city ^H5892 an object ^H8047 of ^H8047 horror ^H8047 and of hissing ^H8322; everyone ^H3605 who passes ^H5674 by it will be ^H8074 [fn]horrified ^H8074 and hiss ^H8319 because ^H5921 of all ^H3605 its [fn]slaughtering ^H4347. 9 I will make them eat ^H398 the flesh ^H1320 of their sons ^H1121 and the flesh ^H1320 of their daughters ^H1323, and they will eat ^H398 one ^H376 another’s ^H7453 flesh ^H1320 in the siege ^H4692 and in the distress ^H4689 with which ^H834 their enemies ^H340 and those who seek ^H1245 their life ^H5315 will distress ^H6693 them.”’

10 “Then you are to break ^H7665 the jar ^H1228 in the sight ^H5869 of the men ^H376 who accompany ^H1980 H854 you, 11 and you shall say ^H559 to them, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, “Just ^H3602 so ^H3602 will I break ^H7665 this ^H2088 people ^H5971 and this ^H2088 city ^H5892, even ^H834 as one breaks ^H7665 a potter’s ^H3335 vessel ^H3627, which ^H834 cannot ^H3201 H3808 again ^H5750 be repaired ^H7495; and they will bury ^H6912 in Topheth ^H8612 [fn]because ^H4480 there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 other place ^H4725 for burial ^H6912. 12 This ^H3651 is ^H3651 what ^H3651 I will do ^H6213 to this ^H2088 place ^H4725 and its inhabitants ^H3427,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068, “so as to make ^H5414 this ^H2088 city ^H5892 like Topheth ^H8612. 13 And the houses ^H1004 of Jerusalem ^H3389 and the houses ^H1004 of the kings ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 will be defiled ^H2931 like the place ^H4725 Topheth ^H8612 because of all ^H3605 the houses ^H1004 on whose ^H834 rooftops ^H1406 they burned ^H6999 incense ^H6999 to all ^H3605 the heavenly ^H8064 host ^H6635 and poured ^H5258 out ^H5258 drink ^H5262 offerings ^H5262 to other ^H312 gods ^H430.”’”

14 Then Jeremiah ^H3414 came ^H935 from Topheth ^H8612, where ^H834 H8033 Yahweh ^H3068 had sent ^H7971 him to prophesy ^H5012; and he stood ^H5975 in the court ^H2691 of the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068 and said ^H559 to all ^H3605 the people ^H5971: 15 “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, ‘Behold ^H2009, I am about to bring ^H935 on this ^H2088 city ^H5892 and all ^H3605 its towns ^H5892 the entire ^H3605 calamity ^H7451 that I have spoken ^H1696 against ^H5921 it because ^H3588 they have stiffened ^H7185 their necks ^H6203 so as not to hear ^H8085 My words ^H1697.’”
