Jesus Betrayed and Arrested

1 When Jesus ^G2424 had spoken ^G3004 these ^G3778 words, He went ^G1831 forth ^G1831 with His disciples ^G3101 to the other ^G4008 side ^G4008 of ^G4008 the Kidron ^G2748 Valley ^G5493, where ^G3699 there was a garden ^G2779, into which ^G3739 He entered ^G1525 [fn]with His disciples ^G3101.

2 Now ^G1161 Judas ^G2455 also ^G2532, who was [fn]betraying ^G3860 Him, knew ^G6063 the place ^G5117, for Jesus ^G2424 had often ^G4178 gathered ^G4863 there ^G1563 with His disciples ^G3101. 3 Judas ^G2455 then ^G3767, having received ^G2983 the Roman [fn]cohort ^G4686 and officers ^G5257 from the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the Pharisees ^G5330, *came ^G2064 there ^G1563 with lanterns ^G5322 and torches ^G2985 and weapons ^G3696. 4 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424, knowing ^G6063 all ^G3956 the things ^G3956 that were coming ^G2064 upon Him, went ^G1831 forth ^G1831 and *said ^G3004 to them, “Whom ^G5101 do you seek ^G2212?” 5 They answered ^G611 Him, “Jesus ^G2424 the Nazarene ^G3480.” He *said ^G3004 to them, “I am ^G1510 He.” And Judas ^G2455 also ^G2532, who was betraying ^G3860 Him, was standing ^G2476 with them. 6 So ^G3767 when ^G5613 He said ^G3004 to them, “I am ^G1510 He,” they drew ^G565 back ^G3694 and fell ^G4098 to the ground ^G5476. 7 Therefore ^G3767 He again ^G3825 asked ^G1905 them, “Whom ^G5101 do you seek ^G2212?” And they said ^G3004, “Jesus ^G2424 the Nazarene ^G3480.” 8 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611, “I told ^G3004 you that I am ^G1510 He; so ^G3767 if ^G1487 you seek ^G2212 Me, let ^G863 these ^G3778 go ^G5217 their way ^G5217,” 9 in ^G2443 order ^G2443 that ^G2443 the word ^G3056 which ^G3739 He spoke ^G3004 would be fulfilled ^G4137, “Of those whom ^G3739 You have given ^G1325 Me, I lost ^G622 not one ^G3762.” 10 Simon ^G4613 Peter ^G4074 then ^G3767, having ^G2192 a sword ^G3162, drew ^G1670 it and struck ^G3817 the high ^G749 priest’s ^G749 slave ^G1401, and cut ^G609 off ^G609 his right ^G1188 ear ^G6090; and the slave’s ^G1401 name ^G3686 was Malchus ^G3124. 11 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to Peter ^G4074, “Put ^G906 the sword ^G3162 into the sheath ^G2336; the cup ^G4221 which ^G3739 the Father ^G3962 has given ^G1325 Me, shall I not drink ^G4095 it?”

Jesus Before the Priests; Peter Denies Jesus

12 So ^G3767 the Roman [fn]cohort ^G4686 and the [fn]commander ^G5506 and the officers ^G5257 of the Jews ^G2453, arrested ^G4815 Jesus ^G2424 and bound ^G1210 Him,

13 and led ^G71 Him to Annas ^G452 first ^G4413; for he was father-in-law ^G3995 of Caiaphas ^G2533, who ^G3739 was high ^G749 priest ^G749 that year ^G1763. 14 Now ^G1161 Caiaphas ^G2533 was the one who had advised ^G4823 the Jews ^G2453 that it was ^G4851 better ^G4851 for one ^G1520 man ^G444 to die ^G599 on behalf ^G5228 of the people ^G2992.

15 And Simon ^G4613 Peter ^G4074 was following ^G190 Jesus ^G2424, and so was another ^G243 disciple ^G3101. Now ^G1161 that disciple ^G3101 was known ^G1110 to the high ^G749 priest ^G749, and entered ^G4897 with Jesus ^G2424 into the court ^G833 of the high ^G749 priest ^G749, 16 but Peter ^G4074 was standing ^G2476 at the door ^G2374 outside ^G1854. So ^G3767 the other ^G243 disciple ^G3101, who was known ^G1110 to the high ^G749 priest ^G749, went ^G1831 out ^G1831 and spoke ^G3004 to the doorkeeper ^G2377, and brought ^G1521 Peter ^G4074 in ^G1521. 17 Then ^G3767 the servant-girl ^G3814 who kept ^G2377 the door ^G2377 *said ^G3004 to Peter ^G4074, “Are you not also ^G2532 one of this ^G3778 man’s ^G444 disciples ^G3101?” He *said ^G3004, “I am ^G1510 not.” 18 Now ^G1161 the slaves ^G1401 and the officers ^G5257 were standing ^G2476 there, having made ^G4160 a charcoal ^G439 fire ^G439, for it was cold ^G5592 and they were warming ^G2328 themselves; and Peter ^G4074 was also ^G2532 with them, standing ^G2476 and warming ^G2328 himself.

19 The high ^G749 priest ^G749 then ^G3767 questioned ^G2065 Jesus ^G2424 about ^G4012 His disciples ^G3101, and about ^G4012 His teaching ^G1322. 20 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 him, “I have spoken ^G2980 openly ^G3954 to the world ^G2889; I always ^G3842 taught ^G1321 in [fn]synagogues ^G4864 and in the temple ^G2413, where ^G3699 all ^G3956 the Jews ^G2453 come ^G4905 together ^G4905; and I spoke ^G2980 nothing ^G3762 in secret ^G2927. 21 Why ^G5101 do you question ^G2065 Me? Question ^G2065 those ^G3588 who have heard ^G191 what ^G5101 I spoke ^G2980 to them; behold ^G1492, they know ^G6063 what ^G3739 I said ^G3004.” 22 And when He had said ^G3004 this ^G3778, one ^G1520 of the officers ^G5257 standing ^G3936 nearby ^G3936 gave ^G1325 Jesus ^G2424 a slap ^G4475, saying ^G3004, “Is that the way ^G3779 You answer ^G611 the high ^G749 priest ^G749?” 23 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 him, “If ^G1487 I have spoken ^G2980 wrongly ^G2560, bear ^G3140 witness ^G3140 of the wrong ^G2556; but if ^G1487 rightly ^G2573, why ^G5101 do you strike ^G1194 Me?” 24 So ^G3767 Annas ^G452 sent ^G649 Him bound ^G1210 to Caiaphas ^G2533 the high ^G749 priest ^G749.

25 Now ^G1161 Simon ^G4613 Peter ^G4074 was standing ^G2476 and warming ^G2328 himself. So ^G3767 they said ^G3004 to him, “You are not also ^G2532 one of His disciples ^G3101, are you?” He denied ^G720 it, and said ^G3004, “I am ^G1510 not.” 26 One ^G1520 of the slaves ^G1401 of the high ^G749 priest ^G749, being ^G1510 a relative ^G4773 of the one whose ^G3739 ear ^G5621 Peter ^G4074 cut ^G609 off ^G609, *said ^G3004, “Did I not see ^G3708 you in the garden ^G2779 with Him?” 27 Peter ^G4074 then ^G3767 denied ^G720 it again ^G3825, and immediately ^G2112 a rooster ^G220 crowed ^G5455.

Jesus Before Pilate

28 Then ^G3767 they *led ^G71 Jesus ^G2424 from Caiaphas ^G2533 into the [fn]Praetorium ^G4232, and it was early ^G4404; and they themselves ^G846 did not enter ^G1525 into the [fn]Praetorium ^G4232 so ^G2443 that they would not be defiled ^G3392, but might eat ^G2068 the Passover ^G3957.

29 Therefore ^G3767 Pilate ^G4091 went ^G1831 out ^G1831 to them and *said ^G5346, “What ^G5101 accusation ^G2724 do you bring ^G5342 against this ^G3778 man ^G444?” 30 They answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to him, “If ^G1487 this ^G3778 man ^G3778 were not an evildoer ^G2556, we would not have delivered ^G3860 Him to you.” 31 So ^G3767 Pilate ^G4091 said ^G3004 to them, “Take ^G2983 Him yourselves ^G4771, and judge ^G2919 Him according ^G2596 to your law ^G3551.” The Jews ^G2453 said ^G3004 to him, “It is not lawful ^G1832 for us to put ^G615 anyone ^G3762 to ^G615 death ^G615,” 32 in ^G2443 order ^G2443 that ^G2443 the word ^G3056 of Jesus ^G2424 which ^G3739 He spoke ^G3004 would be fulfilled ^G4137, signifying ^G4591 by what ^G4169 kind ^G4169 of death ^G2288 He was ^G3195 about ^G3195 to ^G3195 die ^G599.

33 Therefore ^G3767 Pilate ^G4091 entered ^G1525 again ^G3825 into the Praetorium ^G4232, and summoned ^G5455 Jesus ^G2424 and said ^G3004 to Him, “Are You the King ^G935 of the Jews ^G2453?” 34 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611, “Are you saying ^G3004 this ^G3778 from yourself ^G1438, or ^G2228 did others ^G243 tell ^G3004 you about ^G4012 Me?” 35 Pilate ^G4091 answered ^G611, “Am ^G1510 I a Jew ^G2453? Your own nation ^G1484 and the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 delivered ^G3860 You to me; what ^G5101 did You do ^G4160?” 36 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611, “My kingdom ^G932 [fn]is not of this ^G3778 world ^G2889. If ^G1487 My kingdom ^G932 were of this ^G3778 world ^G2889, then My servants ^G5257 would be fighting ^G75 so ^G2443 that I would not be delivered ^G3860 over to the Jews ^G2453; but as it is, My kingdom ^G932 is not [fn]from ^G1782 here ^G1782.” 37 Therefore ^G3767 Pilate ^G4091 said ^G3004 to Him, “So ^G3766 You are a king ^G935?” Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611, “You yourself said ^G3004 I am ^G1510 a king ^G935. For this ^G3778 I have been born ^G1080, and for this ^G3778 I have come ^G2064 into the world ^G2889, to bear ^G3140 witness ^G3140 to the truth ^G225. Everyone ^G3956 who is of the truth ^G225 hears ^G191 My voice ^G5456.” 38 Pilate ^G4091 *said ^G3004 to Him, “What ^G5101 is truth ^G225?”

And when he had said ^G3004 this ^G3778, he went ^G1831 out ^G1831 again ^G3825 to the Jews ^G2453 and *said ^G3004 to them, “I find ^G2147 no ^G3762 guilt ^G156 in Him. 39 But you have a custom ^G4914 that I release ^G630 someone ^G1520 [fn]for you at the Passover ^G3957; do you wish ^G1014 then ^G3767 that I release ^G630 [fn]for you the King ^G935 of the Jews ^G2453?” 40 So ^G3767 they cried ^G2905 out again ^G3825, saying ^G3004, “Not this ^G3778 man ^G3778, but Barabbas ^G912.” Now ^G1161 Barabbas ^G912 was a robber ^G3027.
