God’s Commandments, Man’s Traditions

1 Then ^G5119 some Pharisees ^G5330 and scribes ^G1122 *came ^G4334 to Jesus ^G2424 from Jerusalem ^G2414 and said ^G3004,

2 “Why ^G1223 G5101 do Your disciples ^G3101 break ^G3845 the tradition ^G3862 of the elders ^G4245? For they do not wash ^G3538 their hands ^G5495 when ^G3752 they eat ^G2068 bread ^G740.” 3 And He answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to them, “Why ^G1223 do you yourselves ^G4771 transgress ^G3845 the commandment ^G1785 of God ^G2316 for the sake ^G1223 of your tradition ^G3862? 4 For God ^G2316 said ^G3004, ‘HONOR ^G5091 YOUR FATHER ^G3962 AND MOTHER ^G3384,’ and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS ^G2551 EVIL ^G2551 OF ^G2551 FATHER ^G3962 OR ^G2228 MOTHER ^G3384 IS TO [fn]BE PUT ^G5053 TO DEATH ^G2288.’ 5 But you say ^G3004, ‘Whoever ^G3739 G302 says ^G3004 to his father ^G3962 or ^G2228 mother ^G3384, “Whatever ^G3739 G1437 you might benefit ^G5623 from me ^G1537 G1700 [fn]is given ^G1435 to God,” 6 he need not [fn]honor ^G5091 his father ^G3962.’ And by this you invalidated ^G208 the word ^G3056 of God ^G2316 for the sake ^G1223 of your tradition ^G3862. 7 You hypocrites ^G5273, rightly ^G2573 did Isaiah ^G2268 prophesy ^G4395 of you:

8 ‘THIS ^G3778 PEOPLE ^G2992 HONORS ^G5091 ME WITH THEIR LIPS ^G5491,

BUT THEIR HEART ^G2588 IS FAR ^G4206 AWAY ^G568 FROM ME.

9 ‘BUT IN ^G3155 VAIN ^G3155 DO THEY WORSHIP ^G4576 ME,

TEACHING ^G1321 AS DOCTRINES ^G1319 THE COMMANDS ^G1778 OF MEN ^G444.’”

10 After Jesus called ^G4341 the crowd ^G3793 to Him, He said ^G3004 to them, “Hear ^G191 and understand ^G4920. 11 It is not what ^G3588 enters ^G1525 into the mouth ^G4750 that defiles ^G2840 the man ^G444, but what ^G3588 proceeds ^G1607 out ^G1607 of the mouth ^G4750, this ^G3778 defiles ^G2840 the man ^G444.”

12 Then ^G5119 the disciples ^G3101 *came ^G4334 and *said ^G3004 to Him, “Do You know ^G6063 that the Pharisees ^G5330 were [fn]offended ^G4624 when they heard ^G191 this ^G3588 statement ^G3056?” 13 But He answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “Every ^G3956 plant ^G5451 which ^G3739 My heavenly ^G3770 Father ^G3962 did not plant ^G5452 shall be uprooted ^G1610. 14 Let ^G863 them alone ^G863; they are blind ^G5185 guides ^G3595 [fn]of the blind ^G5185. And if ^G1437 a blind ^G5185 man ^G5185 guides ^G3594 a blind ^G5185 man ^G5185, both ^G297 will fall ^G4098 into a pit ^G999.”

The Heart of Man

15 Now Peter ^G4074 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to Him, “Explain ^G5419 the parable ^G3850 to us.”

16 And [fn]Jesus said ^G3004, “Are you still ^G188 lacking ^G801 in ^G801 understanding ^G801 also ^G2532? 17 Do you not understand ^G3539 that everything ^G3956 that goes ^G1531 into the mouth ^G4750 passes ^G5562 into the stomach ^G2836, and ^G2532 goes ^G1544 into ^G1519 the sewer ^G856? 18 But the things that proceed ^G1607 out ^G1607 of the mouth ^G4750 come ^G1831 from the heart ^G2588, and those ^G2548 defile ^G2840 the man ^G444. 19 For out of the heart ^G2588 come ^G1831 evil ^G4190 thoughts ^G1261, murders ^G5408, adulteries ^G3430, sexual ^G4202 immoralities ^G4202, thefts ^G2829, false ^G5577 witness ^G5577, slanders ^G988. 20 These ^G3778 are the things which defile ^G2840 the man ^G444; but to eat ^G2068 with unwashed ^G449 hands ^G5495 does not defile ^G2840 the man ^G444.”

The Canaanite Woman

21 And going ^G1831 away ^G1831 from ^G1564 there ^G1564, Jesus ^G2424 withdrew ^G402 into the district ^G3313 of Tyre ^G5184 and Sidon ^G4605.

22 And behold ^G2400, a Canaanite ^G5478 woman ^G1135 from that region ^G3725 came ^G1831 out ^G1831 and began to cry ^G2896 out ^G2896, saying ^G3004, “Have ^G1653 mercy ^G1653 on me, Lord ^G2962, Son ^G5207 of David ^G1138; my daughter ^G2364 is cruelly ^G2560 demon-possessed ^G1139.” 23 But He did not answer ^G611 her a word ^G3056. And His disciples ^G3101 came ^G4334 and were pleading with ^G2065 Him, saying ^G3004, “Send ^G630 her away ^G630, because ^G3754 she keeps shouting ^G2896 [fn]at us.” 24 But He answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “I was ^G649 not ^G3756 sent ^G649 except ^G1487 G3361 to the lost ^G622 sheep ^G4263 of the house ^G3624 of Israel ^G2474.” 25 But she came ^G2064 and [fn]was bowing ^G4352 down ^G4352 before ^G4352 Him, saying ^G3004, “Lord ^G2962, help ^G997 me!” 26 And He answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “It is not [fn]good ^G2570 to take ^G2983 the children’s ^G5043 bread ^G740 and throw ^G906 it to the dogs ^G2952.” 27 But she said ^G3004, “Yes ^G3483, Lord ^G2962; [fn]but even ^G2532 the dogs ^G2952 feed ^G2068 on the crumbs ^G5589 which fall ^G4098 from their masters’ ^G2962 table ^G5132.” 28 Then ^G5119 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to her, “O ^G5599 woman ^G1135, your faith ^G4102 is great ^G3173; it shall be done ^G1096 for you as you wish ^G2309.” And her daughter ^G2364 was healed ^G2390 [fn]at once ^G1565 G5610.

Jesus Heals the Crowds

29 And departing ^G3327 from ^G1564 there ^G1564, Jesus ^G2424 went ^G2064 along ^G3844 by the Sea ^G2281 of Galilee ^G1056, and having gone ^G305 up ^G305 on the mountain ^G3735, He was sitting ^G2521 there ^G1563.

30 And [fn]large ^G4183 crowds ^G3793 came ^G4334 to Him, bringing ^G2192 with them those who were lame ^G5560, crippled ^G2948, blind ^G5185, mute ^G2974, and many ^G4183 others ^G2087, and they laid ^G4496 them down ^G4496 at His feet ^G4228; and He healed ^G2323 them. 31 So ^G5620 the crowd ^G3793 marveled ^G2296 as they saw ^G991 the mute ^G2974 speaking ^G2980, the crippled ^G2948 [fn]restored ^G5199, and the lame ^G5560 walking ^G4043, and the blind ^G5185 seeing ^G991; and they glorified ^G1392 the God ^G2316 of Israel ^G2474.

Jesus Feeds Four Thousand

32 And Jesus ^G2424 called ^G4341 His disciples ^G3101 to Him, and said ^G3004, “I feel ^G4697 compassion ^G4697 for the crowd ^G3793, because ^G3754 they [fn]have remained ^G4357 with Me now ^G2235 three ^G5140 days ^G2250 and have ^G2192 nothing ^G3756 G5100 to eat ^G2068; and I do not want ^G2309 to send ^G630 them away ^G630 hungry ^G3523, lest they faint ^G1590 on the way ^G3598.”

33 And the disciples ^G3101 *said ^G3004 to Him, “Where ^G4159 would we get so ^G5118 many ^G5118 loaves ^G740 in this desolate ^G2047 place ^G2047 to satisfy ^G5526 such ^G5118 a ^G5118 large ^G5188 crowd ^G3793?” 34 And Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to them, “How ^G4214 many ^G4214 loaves ^G740 do you have ^G2192?” And they said ^G3004, “Seven ^G2033, and a few ^G3641 small ^G2485 fish ^G2485.” 35 And He directed ^G3853 the crowd ^G3793 to [fn]sit ^G377 down ^G377 on the ground ^G1093; 36 and He took ^G2983 the seven ^G2033 loaves ^G740 and the fish ^G2486; and giving ^G2168 thanks ^G2168, He broke ^G2806 them and kept giving ^G1325 them to the disciples ^G3101, and the disciples ^G3101 gave them to the crowds ^G3793. 37 And they all ^G3956 ate ^G2068 and were satisfied ^G5526, and they picked ^G142 up ^G142 what ^G3588 was left ^G4052 over ^G4052 of the broken ^G2801 pieces ^G2801, seven ^G2033 large baskets ^G4711 full ^G4134. 38 And those ^G3588 who ate ^G2068 were four ^G5070 thousand ^G5070 men ^G435, besides ^G5565 women ^G1135 and children ^G3813.

39 And sending ^G630 away ^G630 the crowds ^G3793, Jesus got ^G1684 into the boat ^G4143 and came ^G2064 to the region ^G3725 of Magadan ^G3093.
